Bestselling author and historian Brian Doherty has died after being found in a California Bay Area park last Friday—just hours after attending a local event, leaving friends and colleagues stunned.
The 57-year-old, who served as a senior editor at the Reason Foundation, is believed to have suffered a fatal fall the night before while attending an art event centered around the historic Battery Yates military defense structures, according to reports.
Doherty had reportedly been dealing with ongoing health issues in recent years, including limited mobility that required him to use a cane. The Reason Foundation suggested those challenges may have played a role in the tragic incident.
Known for his influential 2008 book Radicals for Capitalism, Doherty helped document and shape the story of the modern American libertarian movement, earning him widespread respect across political and intellectual circles.
In a statement, Reason Foundation President David Nott called him “the historian of the libertarian movement,” highlighting the lasting impact of his work.
Those closest to him are now mourning a devastating loss. His friend and fellow author Chicken John Rinaldi described Doherty’s passing as deeply felt, saying it leaves “so many people and so many systems impoverished.”
Authorities have not released further details surrounding the circumstances of his death.
