What should have been a late-night stop turned into a life-altering nightmare for one Texas teen—and his family is still searching for answers.

Seth Jackson, an 18-year-old straight-A student and standout athlete, is now paralyzed after being shot while trying to protect a friend during a violent confrontation outside a Waffle House in Richardson, Texas.

According to his family, the March 19 incident unfolded when Seth stepped in to help a friend who was being attacked by a group of teens in the parking lot. But the situation quickly escalated. At least one person pulled out a gun—and as Seth tried to run, he was shot.

The damage was catastrophic.

Seth suffered a ruptured lung and aorta, multiple fractured ribs, and a shattered spinal cord. Doctors delivered devastating news to his family: he may never walk again.

“They said he’ll never walk again,” his father, James Jackson, said, describing the moment he got the call no parent ever wants to receive. “It’s every parent’s nightmare.”

Two suspects—17-year-old Charles Webster and 18-year-old Taylor Griffin—have been arrested and charged with engaging in organized criminal activity. But the person who actually pulled the trigger remains on the run, leaving the family desperate for justice.

“Why would this guy shoot my son?” James asked, struggling to make sense of the violence that changed everything in seconds.

Friends and family describe Seth as the kind of kid every parent hopes to raise—driven, kind, and hardworking. He balanced academics, athletics, and two jobs, all while preparing for his next chapter at the University of Houston, where he had already committed to attend in the fall.

His future was just beginning.

The family had even helped him secure an apartment near campus. Now, those plans have been replaced with hospital rooms, surgeries, and an uncertain road ahead.

“Life changes,” his father said, snapping his fingers.

Seth has undergone three surgeries in just three days and is now out of the ICU, but his recovery will be long and difficult. His family says their focus right now is simple: keeping him alive and supporting him through whatever comes next.

“Our number one concern is that he survives it,” James said. “We’ll figure out the changes we need to make.”

As the investigation continues and the shooter remains at large, one thing is painfully clear—one split-second act of violence has forever changed a young man’s life, and a family is left picking up the pieces.
