A shocking confrontation on a New York City subway ended with an elderly man being pepper-sprayed in the face after what police say was nothing more than an accidental bump.
According to authorities, the incident happened around 2:50 p.m. on Jan. 7 aboard a northbound No. 5 train as it pulled into the East 180th Street station in the Bronx. The 70-year-old victim and another passenger reportedly bumped into each other by accident — but what followed quickly escalated.
Police say the woman suddenly became aggressive and sprayed the senior directly in the face with pepper spray. The attack left the man suffering from pain and redness, though he refused medical treatment at the scene.
The assailant then fled the train and disappeared before officers arrived, according to the New York City Police Department.
Investigators later released photos of the suspect, describing her as a woman with a dark complexion, approximately 5-foot-2 and about 180 pounds. At the time of the incident, she was reportedly wearing large glasses, headphones over a black beanie, a navy-blue jacket, black sweater, blue pants, and a black hat.
Police emphasized that the violent encounter stemmed from an accidental bump — a reminder of how quickly everyday moments can turn dangerous in crowded public spaces.
The NYPD is asking anyone with information about the suspect’s identity or whereabouts to come forward.
