A devastating tragedy has rocked the skiing world after the 23-year-old son of former Canadian Olympic freestyle skier John Smart died following a horrific avalanche accident in Japan.
Kai Smart, a rising filmmaker and adventure enthusiast, was caught in the deadly slide and buried under snow, leaving him without oxygen for a critical period of time. He was initially rescued and placed in a coma before being airlifted to Vancouver for emergency treatment. But despite doctors’ efforts, his family confirmed he could not be saved.
In a heartbreaking statement, his father revealed the grim reality of the situation: the prolonged lack of oxygen had caused irreversible damage.
“It is with immense sadness that we have to let you know that our kind, brave and beautiful son and brother Kai is no longer with us,” the family shared. “We are beyond heartbroken… there are no words to describe the pain we are feeling losing him so young.”
They remembered Kai as someone who lived at full speed — a fearless explorer with a deep love for life. From skiing and surfing to dirt biking, climbing, and kitesurfing, he chased adventure across the globe and inspired those around him.
A graduate of the University of British Columbia, Kai had just begun carving out his path in filmmaking. He recently completed his first documentary, chronicling a daring expedition through the rugged Tien Shan mountains in Kazakhstan — a project he was said to be incredibly proud of.
In a final act of generosity, Kai’s family revealed his organs are now saving the lives of four others — a powerful legacy born out of unimaginable loss.
Tributes quickly poured in, including from Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy, who wrote: “There are no words. Sending you and your family love.”
John Smart, who represented Canada in the 1992 Albertville and 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, built a celebrated career with 17 World Cup medals. But now, the decorated athlete faces a loss no parent should ever endure — the sudden, heartbreaking death of a son whose life was only just beginning.
Kai’s story is a sobering reminder of how quickly adventure can turn into tragedy — and how even the brightest lives can be taken in an instant.
