Theme Park Employee Dies After Getting Trapped in Ride During Routine Maintenance

A routine day at a popular Tokyo amusement park turned into a heartbreaking tragedy.

A 24-year-old employee has died after becoming trapped inside a ride for several hours at Tokyo Dome City Attractions, according to officials.

The incident happened on Tuesday, April 21, at the park located in Tokyo’s Bunkyo district. According to a statement from Tokyo Dome Corporation, the woman was performing routine maintenance on the park’s “Flying Balloon” ride around 11:50 a.m. when something went terribly wrong.

At some point during the work, she became trapped inside the ride.

Authorities say the employee was stuck between the seats and the central pole of the attraction — a situation that quickly turned critical. Emergency crews launched rescue efforts, but it took hours before she could be freed.

She was finally rescued around 5 p.m. and rushed to a hospital, but sadly, she was later pronounced dead.

The “Flying Balloon” ride lifts guests about 10 meters (roughly 32 feet) into the air and is known for its gentle, rhythmic motion, offering views of the surrounding area. It’s designed for both children and adults and can hold up to 12 riders at a time.

Following the tragedy, Tokyo Dome Corporation issued a statement expressing condolences and apologizing to the victim’s family, as well as to guests.

“We offer our deepest condolences and apologies to the family of the deceased employee,” the company said, adding that it is taking the situation “extremely seriously.”

All rides at the park have now been shut down indefinitely as officials work alongside police and fire authorities to investigate exactly what caused the fatal accident. The park also confirmed that guests who purchased tickets after April 22 will receive full refunds.
