An 18-year-old Cal State Fullerton student died after attending a fraternity event, with police saying alcohol appears to have played a role in his death.
Anthony Joseph Blas was dropped off at the emergency department of St. Jude Medical Center shortly after midnight Saturday, according to the Fullerton Police Department.
Blas was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Investigators later determined that the teenager had been attending an event hosted by a fraternity that is not affiliated with Cal State Fullerton.
“Alcohol consumption appears to have been a contributing factor in the male’s death,” police said.
Authorities said there is currently no evidence that hazing played a role in Blas’ death, and investigators have not found signs of foul play.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Blas had only recently begun his college journey at Cal State Fullerton.
Just months earlier, Los Altos High School celebrated Blas as a graduating senior and highlighted the long list of colleges and universities that had accepted him.
The school announced in May that Blas had chosen Cal State Fullerton and planned to attend the university in the fall.
He had also been accepted to Cal Poly Pomona, Sacramento State, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Arizona, Michigan State University, the University of Oregon, Northern Arizona University, Oregon State University, Arizona State University, the University of Nevada, Reno, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Whittier College, California Lutheran University, the University of La Verne, Utah State University, Utah Tech University and the University of Utah.
His death came only months after graduating from high school and beginning the next chapter of his life.
Police have not released additional details about how much alcohol Blas may have consumed, what happened during the fraternity event or who transported him to the hospital.
Authorities said the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
