An Arizona mother and grandmother died just one day before her 59th birthday after a backyard gathering turned into a horrifying tragedy when a fire pit erupted in flames, leaving her with devastating burns across more than half her body.
Tammy Dodson, 58, spent 10 days fighting for her life at a Phoenix burn center after the September 24 incident at her home in Prescott Valley, Arizona.
The beloved mother, grandmother and healthcare worker died on October 4, just hours before what should have been a joyful birthday celebration with her family.
Now, her grieving relatives are speaking out about the terrifying incident, which they say occurred when Dodson’s boyfriend attempted to revive a dying fire by pouring gasoline onto the flames.
According to family members, the gasoline container ignited, causing an explosive burst of flames that engulfed Dodson.
Her boyfriend reportedly escaped with relatively minor burns, but Dodson suffered catastrophic injuries that ultimately claimed her life.
The tragedy unfolded around 10:45 p.m. on September 24 at a home in the 8500 block of East Tracy Drive.
Officers with the Prescott Valley Police Department and firefighters from the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority responded after receiving a 911 call about someone suffering severe burns.
When emergency responders arrived, they discovered Dodson lying in the backyard with extensive injuries.
Her condition was so serious that she was unable to speak.
Emergency crews arranged for her to be flown to the Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health in Phoenix, where doctors immediately began treating her life-threatening injuries.
According to relatives, Dodson suffered burns covering approximately 53% of her body.
Her older sister, Tina Carl, described the frightening sequence of events that allegedly led to the explosion.
Carl told Arizona television station 12News that the backyard fire had begun dying down when Dodson’s boyfriend grabbed a gasoline container and poured fuel onto it.
The container reportedly ignited, causing flames to spread rapidly.
While Dodson’s boyfriend sustained minor injuries, she was caught in the flames and severely burned.
Police have confirmed that another person at the residence was injured but did not require hospitalization.
Authorities have not publicly released a complete reconstruction of the incident or determined whether anyone will face criminal charges.
For Dodson’s family, the nightmare was made even worse by confusion about where she had been taken following the emergency.
Relatives said they initially learned that something terrible had happened through a voicemail from Dodson’s boyfriend describing a tragic accident.
Family members then began desperately contacting hospitals and police departments in an effort to locate her.
Eventually, they discovered she had been transported to the specialized burn center in Phoenix.
Over the following 10 days, loved ones gathered at the hospital as doctors worked to save her life.
Despite intensive treatment, her condition remained critical.
The family ultimately faced the heartbreaking decision to withdraw life support after learning that Dodson would not recover.
She died on Sunday, October 4, surrounded by loved ones.
The timing of her death was particularly devastating.
Dodson would have celebrated her 59th birthday the following day, October 5.
Instead of gathering for a birthday celebration, her family was left mourning the woman they described as the heart of their lives.
Her relative Kristine Valentine told FOX 10 Phoenix that she wanted the public to remember Dodson as much more than the victim of a terrible accident.
“I don’t want Tammy’s story to become just another story about a woman who died after a fire,” Valentine said.
“She was a beautiful soul who didn’t deserve any of this.”
Dodson spent much of her life caring for other people.
She worked as a certified nursing assistant in the Veterans Affairs healthcare system, helping veterans who needed medical assistance and daily care.
Her family said that same compassion carried over into her personal life.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who loved spending time with the people closest to her.
Relatives described her as someone whose warmth and personality could brighten a room.
Valentine established a fundraising campaign to help the family with medical bills, funeral expenses and the unexpected financial burden of losing a loved one.
In the tribute, she described Dodson as the light of their family.
“She was vibrant, beautiful, loving, and had a way of bringing so much life wherever she went,” Valentine wrote.
Family members emphasized that Dodson’s children and grandchildren meant everything to her.
They are now hoping to arrange a meaningful farewell that reflects the love and kindness she shared with others.
Meanwhile, authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly fire.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Dodson died from complications of thermal injuries and classified her manner of death as accidental.
That medical ruling does not necessarily resolve every question about the events leading to the explosion, and Prescott Valley police have confirmed that their investigation remains active.
As of October 10, authorities had not announced any arrests or criminal charges related to the incident.
The tragedy also serves as a painful reminder of the dangers of using gasoline or other highly flammable liquids to start or revive outdoor fires.
Gasoline produces vapors that can ignite suddenly when exposed to an open flame, potentially allowing fire to travel back toward the container and creating a dangerous flash fire.
Fire safety experts warn that gasoline should never be poured onto an open fire or hot embers, even when flames appear to have died down.
For Dodson’s loved ones, however, the focus remains on preserving her memory rather than allowing the circumstances of her death to define her life.
A woman who devoted her career to helping veterans and spent her personal life caring for her family is gone, leaving behind children, grandchildren and relatives struggling to understand how such an ordinary evening could end so tragically.
Valentine said the family hopes to give Dodson the beautiful goodbye she deserves, bringing together everyone whose life she touched.
