An 86-year-old woman was killed and two other elderly residents were seriously injured when a 72-year-old man allegedly attacked them with a knife inside a nursing home in Germany.
The violence erupted around 7 p.m. Friday, October 16, at the St. Vitus-Stift senior living facility in Olfen, a small town in western Germany, approximately 20 miles north of Dortmund.
According to German authorities, the suspect, who also lived at the facility, allegedly attacked three women in the nursing home’s cafeteria, triggering a massive emergency response.
An 86-year-old woman died at the scene despite efforts to save her life. Two other residents, ages 81 and 83, suffered serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals.
The 83-year-old was initially reported to be in life-threatening condition, although doctors were later able to stabilize her. Both injured women required continued medical care.
Police officers, firefighters and paramedics rushed to the nursing home, with two rescue helicopters dispatched to assist in transporting the victims.
Following the attack, the suspect reportedly returned to his room, where officers located and arrested him without resistance.
German news agency dpa reported that the man uses a wheelchair, raising additional questions about the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Investigators have not publicly established a motive, although local media reported that the suspect may have felt mistreated or bullied by other residents. Authorities have not confirmed those allegations or determined whether they played any role in the violence.
The following day, a judge at Münster District Court issued an arrest warrant for the 72-year-old man, ordering him held in pretrial detention.
He is suspected of manslaughter in the death of the 86-year-old woman and two counts of attempted manslaughter involving the surviving victims, along with aggravated assault.
Under German law, manslaughter is a homicide offense distinct from murder and does not necessarily imply an accidental killing.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was transferred to a prison hospital while the investigation continued.
The attack has left residents and families shaken at St. Vitus-Stift, a city-operated facility that provides nursing care and assistance to 77 elderly residents. The property also includes 36 assisted-living apartments and specialized care for seniors with dementia.
In the aftermath, worried relatives arrived at the nursing home seeking information about their loved ones. Police restricted access to the building while investigators examined evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Local authorities also arranged counseling and emotional support for people affected by the tragedy.
A specialized homicide investigation team has been established to determine what led to the attack and whether there were any warning signs beforehand.
Police have not released the names of the victims or provided details about their relationships with the suspect.
Authorities said the suspect was taken into custody at the scene and that there was no continuing danger to other residents or the surrounding community.
As investigators work to establish a motive, the tragedy has raised difficult questions about how such violence could unfold inside a facility intended to provide care and security for vulnerable older adults.
