American Tourist Falls Nearly 1,000 Feet to Her Death While Taking Photo

A 36-year-old Florida woman was killed in a devastating accident while vacationing with her family in Italy after reportedly stepping away from a mountain trail to take a photograph and plunging nearly 1,000 feet down a steep mountainside.

Michelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva, a communications and marketing professional from the Miami area, died Saturday, October 17, while exploring the breathtaking Dolomites in northern Italy.

The tragedy unfolded near Forcella Pordoi, a mountain pass above the resort town of Canazei, where Rubio Leiva was enjoying a family outing in one of Europe’s most famous mountain ranges.

According to Italian authorities, she was walking along a trail approximately 9,000 feet above sea level when she lost her footing near a particularly exposed section of the route.

Local media reported that Rubio Leiva had stepped away from the marked path to reach a scenic viewpoint where she hoped to take a photograph.

Within moments, she slipped and fell approximately 980 feet down the mountainside.

Her sister, who was nearby, reportedly witnessed the accident and immediately raised the alarm.

Emergency services received a call shortly before noon, prompting an urgent response from the Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service.

A mountain rescue helicopter was dispatched to the remote area, while rescue personnel already nearby worked to locate the woman and coordinate the operation.

Because of the steep cliffs and difficult terrain, reaching the site required specialized mountain rescue equipment and an aerial response.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., medical personnel reached Rubio Leiva, but her injuries were fatal.

A physician pronounced her dead at the scene.

Rescue workers then faced the difficult task of recovering her body from the mountainside.

Authorities arranged for her devastated relatives to be transported by helicopter to Canazei, away from the rescue operation.

A second helicopter flight was used to recover Rubio Leiva’s body and bring it down from the mountain, where it was transferred to Italian police and firefighters.

The operation concluded around 2:30 p.m.

Rubio Leiva and her family had been exploring the area surrounding Sass Pordoi, a dramatic mountain summit in the Sella group of the Italian Dolomites.

The destination is popular with tourists because of its spectacular panoramic views, towering limestone cliffs and cable car that carries visitors to a summit station nearly 10,000 feet above sea level.

The area is also home to the famous Terrace of the Dolomites, an observation point offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountains.

Although the summit can be reached by cable car, nearby hiking routes include steep slopes, loose rocks and exposed sections where even a minor loss of balance can become dangerous.

Forcella Pordoi is particularly challenging in some areas because of its rugged terrain and sharp elevation changes.

Investigators have not suggested that anyone else was involved in Rubio Leiva’s death, which authorities are treating as an accidental fall.

As news of the tragedy spread, additional details emerged about the American tourist and her life away from the mountains.

Born in Guatemala, Rubio Leiva later moved to the United States and attended Brigham Young University, where she studied before establishing a career in communications, marketing and business consulting.

Her professional background included work connected to Miami-based consulting firm Rubio Contesse Advisors.

She was also involved in charitable and volunteer projects, including initiatives helping young people and disadvantaged communities.

According to Italian newspaper Corriere del Trentino, Rubio Leiva had previously described preparing food and supplies with her mother for people experiencing hardship in the Miami area.

Her volunteer work reflected a commitment to helping others alongside her professional responsibilities.

In 2025, she reportedly relocated to Rome to pursue opportunities as a remote consultant, allowing her to combine work with her love of travel.

It remains unclear whether she was still living in Italy at the time of the accident or had returned specifically for the family vacation.

The tragedy has renewed attention to the dangers of leaving designated trails in mountainous regions, particularly when visitors move toward exposed viewpoints for photographs.

Mountain rescue organizations recommend remaining on marked paths, wearing footwear suitable for uneven terrain and avoiding unstable rocks or steep edges, even when an area appears accessible.

Loose gravel, wet surfaces and unexpected changes in elevation can make mountain trails hazardous, especially at high altitudes.

The Dolomites, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attract millions of visitors each year because of their extraordinary scenery and extensive hiking opportunities.

However, their dramatic cliffs and rugged landscapes also require caution, particularly when tourists venture beyond established routes.

For Rubio Leiva’s family, what began as an opportunity to enjoy a beautiful mountain landscape together ended in an unimaginable loss.

The 36-year-old is being remembered for her professional accomplishments, love of travel and dedication to helping others.

Her death serves as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly an ordinary vacation outing can turn tragic, even in one of the world’s most celebrated natural destinations.
