An 18-year-old Georgia college rodeo athlete has been left paralyzed in his lower body after a devastating accident during a competition, leaving his family facing an uncertain future as he begins a difficult recovery.
Clayton Dover, a member of the South Georgia State College Rodeo Team, suffered a serious spinal injury Saturday, October 17, while participating in the sport he loves.
According to a fundraising campaign organized on his behalf, the accident shattered two vertebrae in his neck, known as C6 and C7, causing injuries that required immediate medical attention.
Dover subsequently underwent a grueling six-and-a-half-hour operation to stabilize his spine.
Although he survived the emergency surgery, his family confirmed that he is currently experiencing paralysis in the lower half of his body.
The full extent of his long-term injuries remains uncertain, and doctors have not publicly indicated whether he could eventually regain movement.
For Dover, who had been pursuing his passion for rodeo while attending college, the accident has suddenly changed nearly every aspect of his life.
Instead of preparing for his next competition, the young athlete is now beginning what could be months or years of rehabilitation, specialized medical care and physical therapy.
His family is also confronting the financial challenges that often accompany serious spinal injuries, including hospital bills, mobility equipment and modifications needed to make a home accessible.
A GoFundMe campaign established by Adam Baswell is raising money to help cover those expenses while allowing Dover’s loved ones to remain by his side.
“Clayton and his family are now facing a long and uncertain road ahead, one filled with immense physical, emotional, and financial challenges,” the fundraiser explains.
The campaign also highlights the young athlete’s determination as he begins adjusting to his injuries.
“Through it all, Clayton’s strength, grit, and determination continue to carry him forward as he begins the hard work of recovery.”
News of the accident has prompted an outpouring of support from fellow rodeo competitors, college teammates, friends and families across the community.
The South Georgia State College Rodeo Team shared an emotional message urging supporters to rally around Dover during one of the most difficult periods of his life.
“In the rodeo world, we know how to stand together when times get tough,” the team wrote.
The organization encouraged fellow competitors and supporters to surround the injured athlete with encouragement, prayers and assistance as he faces the challenges ahead.
South Georgia State College’s rodeo program is relatively new, having launched its competitive team in 2025 under the leadership of rodeo coach Danny Varnadore.
The team competes in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Ozark Region, giving students opportunities to develop their skills while representing the college at events across several states.
Dover’s accident has highlighted the dangers associated with rodeo, a sport that demands considerable athletic ability and carries an inherent risk of serious injury.
Spinal injuries involving the cervical vertebrae can affect movement and sensation throughout the body. The extent of recovery depends on several factors, including the location and severity of damage to the spinal cord.
Although some patients experience improvements through rehabilitation, others face permanent disabilities and require long-term assistance.
For Dover, the immediate focus is on medical recovery, rehabilitation and adapting to the physical challenges caused by the accident.
His family’s fundraiser is intended to help pay for specialized rehabilitation, physical therapy, adaptive equipment and transportation expenses associated with ongoing treatment.
Supporters have already contributed thousands of dollars, reflecting the close connections within the college rodeo community.
The exact circumstances of the accident, including the event in which Dover was competing and how he was injured, have not been publicly detailed.
As he begins the lengthy recovery process, his family and teammates remain focused on supporting him through the challenges ahead.
