Terrifying Video Shows Massive Oil Rig Sinking Into Ocean With 115 People on Board

A massive offshore oil rig carrying 115 workers suddenly lost stability and sank into the Atlantic Ocean, triggering a desperate rescue operation as five people remained unaccounted for.

The terrifying disaster unfolded Saturday night, October 24, off the coast of Gabon in Central Africa, where the enormous Prospector 5 drilling rig was preparing for an upcoming oil exploration operation.

Dramatic footage circulating on social media captured the towering structure sinking into the dark ocean as stunned witnesses watched the unfolding catastrophe. The enormous platform, measuring approximately 231 feet long and 250 feet wide, disappeared beneath the waves in an incident that has raised urgent questions about what went wrong.

The rig’s owner and operator, Borr Drilling Limited, confirmed that the disaster occurred at approximately 8:37 p.m. local time while crews were conducting positioning operations ahead of a planned drilling campaign.

Of the 115 people aboard the platform, 110 were safely accounted for, while five remained missing as rescue teams launched an extensive search across the surrounding waters.

In an update released Monday, October 26, the company said aircraft and marine rescue crews were continuing their efforts to locate the missing workers. Those who survived were being transported ashore in Gabon, where they would receive care and support.

Borr Drilling also confirmed that it had contacted the families of the missing personnel as the search entered another critical phase.

“We are deeply concerned for those who remain unaccounted for and everyone affected by this incident,” Borr Drilling CEO Bruno Morand said in an earlier statement, emphasizing that the company’s immediate focus was the rescue operation and the welfare of those involved.

Investigators have already identified a possible explanation for the frightening collapse.

According to preliminary findings, the Prospector 5 experienced what engineers call a “punch-through” event while undergoing preloading operations, a procedure designed to test whether the seabed can safely support a drilling platform.

Unlike floating oil rigs, jack-up rigs such as the Prospector 5 rely on enormous legs that extend down to the ocean floor, allowing the main platform to be elevated above the water.

A punch-through can occur when one or more of those legs suddenly sink into weaker layers of seabed beneath the surface. The unexpected movement can cause the entire structure to tilt, lose stability and potentially collapse.

Borr Drilling said initial evidence suggested such an event caused the rig to lose stability before sinking. However, the company stressed that a comprehensive investigation would be necessary to establish exactly what happened.

The platform had been contracted to support drilling operations for energy company BW Energy in Gabon’s Dussafu offshore oil field. It was preparing for a new drilling campaign when the accident occurred.

The disaster also forced the suspension of production at the nearby MaBoMo oil facility, although officials emphasized that the shutdown was consistent with standard procedures during drilling preparations.

Energy company Panoro Energy, which holds an interest in the offshore development, confirmed that there had been no reported damage to the production facility or its associated equipment. The company also said there was no reported accidental release of harmful substances into the surrounding ocean from the facility.

Meanwhile, Gabonese authorities mobilized emergency personnel and naval resources to assist in the search. The country’s petroleum ministry also initiated a technical investigation into the circumstances surrounding the sinking.

The accident has raised concerns about potential disruptions to future drilling operations, particularly because the Prospector 5 had been contracted for an extensive drilling campaign expected to support additional oil production.

But with workers still missing, the immediate focus remains on the human toll of the disaster.

Borr Drilling said it would continue cooperating with authorities, emergency responders and industry specialists to determine what caused the rig to sink while supporting the families awaiting news of their loved ones.
