A 12-year-old schoolgirl was killed after being struck by a double-decker bus during her lunch break in Scotland, leaving classmates traumatized and a devastated family mourning the loss of their beloved daughter.

Sophia Aitken, a student at Kilwinning Academy in the town of Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, died Tuesday, November 3, after being hit by a Stagecoach bus on Lauchlan Way shortly after 1 p.m.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene around 1:10 p.m. after receiving reports that a young pedestrian had been struck by the vehicle. Despite their efforts, Sophia was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tragedy unfolded during the school lunch period, when students were outside enjoying their break from classes.

One parent described the frightening moments after their son, who was heading out for lunch, heard the commotion.

“My son was heading for his lunch from school and heard it happen,” the parent told local media.

“He heard screams. I think everyone standing nearby got a fright and was left traumatised. It’s just terrible.”

Police quickly sealed off the surrounding roadway as investigators began examining the circumstances of the collision. Emergency responders, including ambulance crews and specialist medical teams, attended the scene.

Authorities confirmed that no one else was injured.

News of Sophia’s death devastated the school community, where teachers and classmates remembered her as a cheerful, kindhearted girl who brightened the lives of those around her.

In a statement, North Ayrshire Council described Sophia as a popular student whose personality made her a cherished member of Kilwinning Academy.

“Known for her bright smile, vibrant personality and helpful nature, she was a popular and well-liked member of our school community,” a spokesperson said.

The school acknowledged the profound impact of her death and announced that counseling and additional support would be made available to students and staff in the coming days, weeks and months.

Flowers and heartfelt tributes soon appeared near the scene of the crash as residents struggled to come to terms with the loss.

Sophia’s grieving family also released an emotional statement through Police Scotland, remembering the little girl whose life had been cut tragically short.

“We are devastated at the loss of our darling daughter Sophia,” the family said. “She was a ray of sunshine, and was loved by everyone who knew her.”

They added that the community’s outpouring of support had brought some comfort during an unimaginably difficult time.

“A light has gone out, and it will never return,” the family said, asking for privacy as they mourn.

Meanwhile, Police Scotland has launched an investigation to determine exactly how the collision occurred.

Authorities have not publicly established whether the bus driver or any other road user contributed to the accident. No arrests or criminal charges have been announced.

The roadway remained closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene before reopening around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Sergeant Stewart Taylor expressed condolences to Sophia’s family and thanked witnesses who assisted investigators following the tragedy.

He also acknowledged the emotional toll the collision had taken on the surrounding community.

“This incident will be felt by the local community and our investigation continues to establish what happened,” Taylor said.

Police are appealing for additional witnesses, particularly anyone with dashcam footage or information that could help reconstruct the moments leading up to the collision.

Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Police Scotland at 101 and reference incident number 1484 from November 3, 2026.
