2 Killed, 16 Injured in Devastating School Bus Crash

A morning bus ride to school turned into a deadly tragedy in France on Friday when a passenger bus carrying children and adults suddenly veered off the road, slammed into trees and crashed into a ditch, killing a 7-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man.

At least 16 others were injured in the November 6 accident near the small village of Lent, approximately 40 miles northeast of Lyon. Three victims suffered serious injuries, including at least one whose condition was considered life-threatening.

The horrific crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. on a rural stretch of the D22 highway as the bus traveled from Lyon toward Bourg-en-Bresse, carrying passengers on a regularly scheduled regional route.

Among those aboard were approximately 15 children traveling to middle and high schools in the surrounding area.

According to local officials, the bus unexpectedly crossed the roadway before striking trees and coming to rest in a roadside ditch.

The impact caused extensive damage to the vehicle, tearing apart part of its side and scattering debris across the road.

Lent Mayor Yves Cristin, who arrived shortly after the crash, described a devastating scene, with injured passengers and shaken survivors struggling to understand what had happened.

Emergency crews rushed to the remote location, launching a massive rescue operation involving more than 100 firefighters, approximately 50 police officers, four helicopters and dozens of emergency vehicles.

Rescuers worked to reach the injured passengers and transport those in critical condition to nearby hospitals.

Authorities initially confirmed that two people had died, later identifying the victims as a 7-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man.

Sixteen additional people were reported injured, including three seriously, although officials cautioned that the casualty figures remained preliminary as hospitals continued treating patients.

The accident sent shock waves through the surrounding communities, where families had expected their children to arrive at school safely that morning.

Local officials opened an emergency reception center in the village hall to assist survivors and relatives searching for information about loved ones.

Psychological support teams were also deployed to help passengers, families and emergency responders cope with the tragedy.

French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot traveled to the scene and described the crash as a devastating event.

Education Minister Édouard Geffray also expressed condolences, emphasizing the particular heartbreak of an accident involving children on their way to school.

“It is always a difficult moment when our students, our children, are victims of an accident like this,” Geffray told reporters.

French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed sympathy for the victims and their families, thanking emergency personnel for their response.

Meanwhile, investigators have launched a criminal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Prosecutors in Bourg-en-Bresse opened an investigation into possible road-related homicide and aggravated injuries, with specialist officers assigned to reconstruct the bus’s movements before it left the roadway.

The driver was injured and hospitalized following the accident. Prosecutors said he had not initially been questioned because of his medical condition.

Officials later reported that preliminary testing found no evidence of alcohol or drugs in the driver’s system.

Authorities are examining whether road conditions, mechanical problems, driver actions or another factor caused the bus to veer off course.

The village mayor said the roadway was wet at the time of the accident but reported no fog that would have significantly reduced visibility.

However, investigators have not established whether the weather played any role in the crash.

The bus was operated by Philibert Transports as part of a regional public transportation service, rather than being a vehicle dedicated exclusively to schoolchildren.

The distinction is significant because the route carried both ordinary commuters and students, making the tragedy particularly devastating for families across the area.

Authorities closed the D22 highway near the crash site for several hours while emergency crews worked and investigators examined the damaged bus.
