A shocking new development has emerged in the death of Florida teen Anna Kepner, as her 16-year-old stepbrother has now been indicted by a federal grand jury in a case that has left many stunned.

Anna, 18, was found dead during a family cruise aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship in November. Her body was discovered inside the cabin she shared with her stepbrother, hidden under a bed.

Authorities later determined she died from mechanical asphyxiation.

Now, months later, the teen—identified only as T.H. in court documents—has been formally charged with murder and aggravated sexual abuse. Despite being a minor, he will be tried as an adult in federal court in South Florida and could face life in prison if convicted.

According to prosecutors, the alleged crimes happened while the ship was traveling in international waters on its way to Miami. Officials say T.H. is accused of sexually assaulting Anna before killing her.

U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones called the case an “unimaginable loss” for the family, adding that prosecutors will present their evidence in court while emphasizing that the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The tragedy has only grown more disturbing as details continue to surface.

Anna, a high school cheerleader from Florida’s Space Coast, was just weeks away from graduation when her life was cut short. She had been traveling with multiple family members, including her father, stepmother, step-siblings, and grandparents, when she suddenly went missing during the trip.

Her ex-boyfriend later claimed that her stepbrother had been “infatuated” with her, and that Anna had expressed discomfort around him in the months leading up to the cruise.

Reports also indicate the teen had not taken prescribed medication for ADHD and insomnia in the days leading up to the incident.

The case was initially handled under juvenile proceedings and kept sealed, but new filings have brought more details into the open. Court documents reveal that the suspect’s father claimed he did not give permission for his son to go on the trip and later accused his ex-wife of failing to properly supervise him.

There are also claims that, in the aftermath of the tragedy, family members exchanged messages about keeping details of the situation quiet as the story began spreading online.

As the case moves forward in federal court, investigators continue to piece together exactly what happened during those final hours aboard the ship.
