Shocking court documents are painting a disturbing new picture of disgraced former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax — revealing a spiraling personal life marked by alleged alcoholism, financial chaos, and family turmoil in the months leading up to a tragic murder-suicide.

According to explosive divorce filings obtained by The New York Post, Fairfax’s life had unraveled in dramatic fashion after his political downfall, with claims he became increasingly isolated, heavily dependent on alcohol, and disengaged from his family. The documents allege he would often lock himself inside a home office surrounded by empty wine bottles, trash, and piles of dirty laundry, only stepping out briefly to eat or smoke.

In one of the most alarming claims, court records state Fairfax allegedly used money that had been set aside for his children’s horseback riding lessons to purchase a handgun in 2022 — the same weapon later tied to the deadly incident.

The filings, connected to a bitter and ongoing divorce, also accuse Fairfax of failing to pay bills, allowing the family’s mortgage to fall into default, and refusing to contribute meaningfully to family life. His estranged wife reportedly described him in stark terms, claiming he had become a “deadbeat” and was no longer a productive member of the household.

A judge overseeing the case noted that Fairfax, who represented himself in court, did not contest the allegations laid out against him. He had been ordered to leave the family home by April 30.

But the situation took a devastating turn weeks before that deadline.

Authorities say Fairfax fatally shot his wife inside their Annandale, Virginia home before turning the gun on himself, ending a decades-long marriage in a violent and tragic conclusion. Police pointed to the couple’s contentious divorce as a likely factor in the deadly escalation.

The newly revealed documents also trace Fairfax’s downward spiral back to 2019, when multiple women publicly accused him of sexual assault — allegations that derailed what had once been a promising political career. According to the filings, the fallout from those accusations appeared to trigger a decline in his mental health, which worsened after he left office in 2022.

Despite being described as intelligent and capable, the documents suggest Fairfax struggled with unresolved emotional and psychological issues, compounded by isolation and heavy drinking. His estranged wife claimed he showed little awareness of how his behavior impacted those around him, including his children.

The couple, married for 20 years, had been living under the same roof despite their separation, with divorce proceedings underway since mid-2025.

What was once seen as a rising political future has now ended in one of the most shocking and tragic personal collapses in recent Virginia political history — leaving behind unanswered questions about warning signs, accountability, and how it all spiraled so far out of control.
