A tragic crash in Washington has left a community heartbroken after a high school senior lost his life in a devastating accident.
Authorities say 18-year-old Elden Ragsdale was killed on April 18 after becoming trapped underneath an SUV following a single-vehicle crash. Deputies with the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a vehicle flipped on its side with someone pinned underneath.
When first responders arrived, they found Ragsdale trapped beneath the SUV and sadly pronounced him dead at the scene.
Ragsdale was a senior at Mark Morris High School, where the loss has deeply shaken students and staff.
Investigators say the driver, 19-year-old Jacob Manecke Jr., stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities. He was driving a Toyota 4Runner involved in the crash. Officials believe alcohol may have been a factor, though the investigation is still ongoing and will be forwarded to prosecutors to determine if charges will be filed.
Three other passengers in the vehicle were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
School officials and the district quickly shared messages of support as the news spread.
“Our hearts are with the student’s family and friends during this incredibly painful time,” said Principal Aaron Whitright, acknowledging how deeply the loss is impacting the school community.
The Longview Public Schools also released a statement, saying counseling services are being made available to help students and staff cope with the tragedy.
Ragsdale’s family is remembering him as a kind, passionate young man with big dreams for the future.
“To know Elden was to know the most genuine and loving son, brother and friend,” his parents shared. “He had big plans and already knew what he wanted in life.”
They said he hoped to attend lineman school and had a love for cars, racing, and the outdoors. Whether he was at a car show, on a motocross track, or out hunting and fishing, Elden was always doing what he loved.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help support his family as they navigate the heartbreaking loss.
