Passengers aboard the Sapphire Princess expected a relaxing Mediterranean getaway — but what unfolded instead left thousands in shock.
In a chilling turn of events, crew members launched a three-hour recovery mission after spotting what first appeared to be an orange object floating in the water Tuesday evening. That object turned out to be a life jacket — and it quickly became clear something far more tragic was unfolding in the western Mediterranean Sea.
Footage captured the moment a lifeboat retrieved the body of a man wearing a purple shirt and black shorts. He was carefully covered and brought onboard, where medical staff examined him before moving him to the ship’s hold. The cruise briefly resumed its journey just before 7 p.m. — but the nightmare wasn’t over.
Less than an hour later, another life jacket was spotted.
The ship turned around again.
Soon, a second body was recovered… followed by three more.
By the end of the operation, five bodies — believed to be migrants — had been pulled from the sea.
“It was very sad to watch. I was shaking inside,” one passenger said, describing the haunting scene. “The crew were very good at keeping everyone calm, but everyone was shocked.”
The unnamed passenger added that while no official confirmation was given onboard, many believed the victims were migrants. “The crew treated them with respect, and we were all offered counseling,” they said.
The ship, carrying more than 3,000 passengers, was traveling between the coasts of Spain and North Africa at the time. It later docked in Cartagena, Spain, as scheduled.
For many onboard, the experience was unlike anything they had ever witnessed.
“I’ve been on lots of cruises and I’ve never seen this before,” the passenger said. “There was someone who said they’ve been on 60 cruises and never seen anything like this.”
In a statement, Princess Cruises confirmed the discovery, saying the crew immediately changed course after spotting the life jacket and deployed a rescue boat.
“Five deceased individuals were recovered,” the company said, noting that none of them were passengers or crew members. The cruise line also confirmed coordination with maritime rescue authorities.
They added: “We extend our sincere condolences for this loss and are grateful to our crew for their swift response and efforts to render assistance.”
