A quiet Brooklyn morning turned into a nightmare after a 9-year-old boy was struck and killed by a school bus while crossing the street.
The tragic incident happened around 8:20 a.m. in Williamsburg at the intersection of Lee Avenue and Lorimer Street. According to police, the young boy was crossing when he was hit by a yellow school bus.
First responders rushed to the scene and found the child unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from severe injuries to his head and body. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say the bus driver, a 49-year-old man, initially fled after the impact but later returned once he realized what had happened, according to reports.
The devastating loss has shaken the community and drawn a response from Zohran Mamdani, who said he was “devastated” by the incident.
“My heart is with his family and loved ones as they endure this tragic loss,” he said in a statement. “Children should be safe walking around our city, and this horrific road death is a painful reminder that we must continue to use every tool available to make our streets safe for all New Yorkers.”
Photos from the scene showed a heavy police presence, with emergency crews, crime scene tape, and markers placed on the roadway as investigators worked to piece together what happened.
As of now, no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing as officials look into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
