A tragic accident at Carnival Cruise Line’s new private destination in the Bahamas has left an elderly cruise passenger dead after her mobility scooter reportedly went off a pier and into the water.

The heartbreaking incident happened on May 9 while the Carnival Celebration ship was docked at Celebration Key, Carnival’s private resort destination in the Bahamas.

According to Carnival Cruise Line, the guest — an 88-year-old woman from the United States — lost control of her mobility scooter and plunged into the water below.

“Carnival teams responded, successfully retrieving her from the water,” the cruise line said in a statement shared with USA TODAY. “Despite resuscitation efforts, she did not survive.”

The Royal Bahamas Police Force said early findings suggest the woman may have struck her head against the side of the vessel before entering the water.

Authorities have not publicly released the woman’s identity.

At the time of the tragedy, the Carnival Celebration was sailing on a week-long Eastern Caribbean cruise, according to CruiseMapper.

Police and the coroner’s office later took custody of the woman as officials launched an active investigation into exactly what happened.

An autopsy will now be performed to officially determine her cause of death, authorities said.

“Our thoughts are with her family,” Carnival added in its statement.

The incident comes just weeks after another cruise tragedy in the Bahamas involving a Norwegian Cruise Line passenger who died in a suspected drowning at the company’s private island destination, Great Stirrup Cay.

As investigators continue looking into the deadly accident, many cruise passengers online have already begun sharing condolences for the woman’s family following the shocking incident at Celebration Key.
