Four people were hurt after a bus carrying high school football players flipped over in North Carolina on Wednesday.
The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. on July 8 on a ramp from Highway 17 to Highway 74 in Leland, a town located just west of Wilmington.
According to Leland town officials, the bus was carrying the Douglas Byrd High School football team home after a seven-on-seven event at South Brunswick High School.
There were 33 people on board at the time of the crash, including 26 students, officials said.
Four people were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The rest of the people on the bus were transported by Brunswick County’s mass evacuation bus. Officials said everyone involved was expected to survive.
The crash happened roughly two hours from Douglas Byrd High School, which is located in Cumberland County.
“Thankfully, there do not appear to be any life-threatening injuries at this time,” Cumberland County Schools said in a statement to WECT.
“Out of an abundance of caution, those involved in the accident are being evaluated by medical personnel, and the district is coordinating transportation for students to return home safely. We appreciate the quick response of law enforcement and medical personnel. Our focus at this time is on supporting our students, staff and families.”
Leland police are investigating what led up to the crash.
