A woman was left critically injured Thursday morning after police say two young brothers took their parents’ car and ended up crashing into her as she walked her dog through an Oakland crosswalk.
Surveillance video obtained by KGO-TV shows a Toyota sedan speeding northbound on 35th Avenue at around 9:15 a.m.
Oakland police said the Toyota sideswiped another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction before losing control.
The car then struck a woman who was walking her dog in a crosswalk near 35th Avenue and Mangels Avenue.
Police said the collision happened at around 9:30 a.m.
The woman and both children were taken to a hospital following the crash.
The woman remained in critical condition.
The boys’ uncle told KGO-TV that the children are just 4 and 7 years old and had taken their parents’ car keys while the adults were asleep.
According to the uncle, the 7-year-old suffered a broken leg, while the 4-year-old sustained a concussion.
Oakland police said both boys were in stable condition.
Authorities said the crash happened several blocks away from the children’s home.
Investigators are now working to determine exactly how the boys were able to get access to the vehicle and drive away.
Police said the children’s parents are cooperating with the investigation.
Witness Lavelle Shah-Marquis described the aftermath as disturbing.
“I pray that she’s okay, but it was bad,” Shah-Marquis told KGO-TV.
