Five Wounded in Mass Shooting at Virginia State University

Virginia State University was rocked by a mass shooting early Saturday morning that left five people wounded, including one victim in critical condition, just days before students were set to begin the fall semester.

Police rushed to the campus shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 15 after gunfire erupted near the Quad Annexes, a residential housing area at the university.

When officers arrived, they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds.

All five victims were taken to local hospitals.

According to the university, one person was in critical condition while the other four suffered injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Authorities have not publicly identified any of the victims.

Virginia State University said multiple suspects were believed to have been involved in the shooting.

The campus, located in Ettrick about 20 miles from Richmond, was placed on lockdown as police swarmed the area.

That lockdown has since been lifted, but officials said a heavy law enforcement presence remained on campus as investigators worked to determine exactly what happened.

The Chesterfield County Police Department is leading the investigation with help from Virginia State University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

No arrests or suspect identities had been publicly announced.

The shooting came at an especially unsettling time for the university, with fall semester classes scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 17.

Virginia State University, founded in 1882, has roughly 5,000 students and includes 11 residence halls, 18 academic buildings and a 412-acre agricultural research facility.

Officials said additional information would be released as the investigation develops.

Anyone with information about the shooting is being asked to contact Chesterfield County Police, Crime Solvers or Virginia State University Police.
