Woman Nearly Strangled After Scarf Gets Caught in Moving Car

A Texas woman is warning others about a frightening fashion accident after her long scarf became caught in a moving car and began tightening around her neck.

Liz Carole, who lives in Dallas, was attending a wedding in Kansas City, Missouri, on Sept. 19 when the terrifying incident happened.

Carole had dressed for the occasion in a floor-length black gown with a matching scarf.

After the ceremony ended, she and several friends ordered a car to take them to a nearby restaurant before returning for the reception later that evening.

Everyone climbed into the vehicle and buckled up.

Then, as the driver began pulling away, Carole suddenly felt herself being yanked backward.

The scarf around her neck had become trapped.

Carole said her hands immediately flew to her neck as she realized she was being choked.

She screamed, alerting her friends and prompting the driver to stop the vehicle.

When Carole opened the door, she discovered that part of her scarf had been caught in the door and was being pulled toward one of the car’s tires.

The fabric had begun wrapping around the tire as the vehicle moved.

Making the situation even more dangerous, Carole said she was sitting on another section of the scarf.

Instead of the fabric simply slipping free, the resistance caused it to tighten around her body.

She suffered painful friction burns between her shoulder blades and across her collarbone area.

At first, Carole and her friends were stunned by what had happened.

She checked herself in a mirror and initially thought the injuries did not look particularly serious because her skin was not very red.

She decided to continue with the evening.

But by the time the group reached the restaurant, the pain had become much worse.

Carole said she could then see that the top layer of her skin had been scraped away.

She decided to seek treatment at an urgent care clinic.

Even the medical staff were surprised by the unusual circumstances behind her injuries.

Carole recalled that word of the accident apparently spread among the nurses, with several coming into the room to ask what had happened.

One nurse compared the bizarre accident to something out of a Final Destination movie.

Carole said the comparison was funny but also unsettling considering how quickly the situation could have become far more serious.

The first several days of recovery were the most painful.

About a week after the incident, however, Carole said the burns were shrinking and the pain had eased considerably.

She is now focused on minimizing scarring.

After sharing her experience online, Carole began hearing from other people who said they had experienced surprisingly similar accidents involving long scarves or loose clothing near cars.

What surprised her most was how recently some of those incidents had reportedly occurred.

Her story has since gained significant attention on social media, with hundreds of thousands of views.

Carole hopes the experience serves as a warning to anyone wearing long scarves, flowing dresses or other loose clothing while getting into a vehicle.
