Two young children were shot and killed in broad daylight in Los Angeles on Sunday, October 11, in a horrifying incident that police believe was an attempted murder-suicide.
The victims, a 4-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, died after being rushed to nearby hospitals. The suspected gunman, believed to be the children’s father, reportedly turned the weapon on himself but survived and remains in police custody.
Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to reports of gunfire around 12:49 p.m. near Venice Boulevard and South Catalina Street in the city’s Pico-Union neighborhood, just west of downtown Los Angeles.
When police arrived, they discovered three people suffering from gunshot wounds. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported all three to hospitals, where the two children were pronounced dead despite emergency efforts.
Investigators believe the man shot both children before attempting to take his own life. The suspect, described as being between 30 and 40 years old, was hospitalized with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have not disclosed his medical condition.
The Los Angeles Times and NBC Los Angeles reported that police believe the suspect may be the children’s father. However, other police statements indicated that the relationship had not been officially confirmed, leaving questions about what led to the deadly attack.
The identities of the children and the suspected shooter have not been publicly released.
The shooting unfolded near a busy intersection in the middle of the afternoon, with at least one witness reportedly watching the terrifying events from a passing Los Angeles Metro bus.
Video captured in the aftermath showed frightened witnesses reacting to the gunfire as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
One witness could be heard expressing disbelief after realizing what had happened, while another described seeing the suspected shooter turn the weapon on himself.
Investigators have since requested surveillance footage from a Metro bus traveling through the area at the time of the shooting. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority confirmed the request, and officials hope the recording will help establish the sequence of events.
Aerial footage from local news helicopters showed police cruisers, fire trucks and emergency vehicles surrounding the intersection as officers secured the area with yellow crime scene tape.
The deaths have shaken residents of Pico-Union, a densely populated neighborhood west of downtown Los Angeles.
One local resident told ABC7 that the tragedy was especially painful because the victims were so young, expressing sympathy for the families forced to confront an unimaginable loss.
Although investigators suspect an attempted murder-suicide, they have not established a motive or confirmed whether the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute.
Police said there were no additional suspects being sought and assured residents that the incident did not pose an ongoing threat to the community.
Detectives are continuing to examine surveillance footage, interview witnesses and review evidence collected at the scene to determine exactly what happened before the shots were fired.
As of Monday, October 12, authorities had not publicly announced criminal charges against the hospitalized suspect.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine why two children lost their lives in a deadly shooting that unfolded in the middle of a Los Angeles afternoon.
