19 Rushed to Hospitals After Dozens Fall Violently Ill at Walmart Distribution Center

Dozens of people became violently ill at a Walmart distribution center in Tennessee, prompting a major emergency response as authorities investigate a possible food poisoning outbreak.

The alarming incident unfolded late Thursday, October 8, into Friday morning at the company’s distribution facility in Lebanon, approximately 30 miles east of Nashville.

Early reports suggested as many as 120 people had become sick, with roughly 30 hospitalized. However, the Wilson County Emergency Management Agency later released updated figures confirming that 25 to 30 patients were evaluated at the scene and 19 were transported to area hospitals.

According to emergency officials, crews initially responded to a call involving a woman experiencing symptoms of a possible food-related illness.

When first responders arrived, they discovered that numerous other people were also feeling sick, prompting requests for additional ambulances and emergency personnel.

Workers reportedly experienced nausea and vomiting, raising concerns that a shared food source might have caused the sudden wave of illness.

The situation required assistance from several neighboring emergency agencies, including Mount Juliet EMS and Rutherford County EMS, as medical crews assessed patients and coordinated hospital transportation.

Authorities have not disclosed the conditions of those hospitalized or whether any patients have since been released.

Although food poisoning is suspected, investigators have not identified a specific cause.

It remains unclear whether those affected consumed the same meal, purchased food from a common vendor or were exposed to something else inside the facility.

Walmart acknowledged the incident and confirmed that it is cooperating with authorities.

“The health and safety of our associates is a top priority,” a company spokesperson said. “We’re working with local emergency management and health officials as they investigate.”

The sudden illnesses have raised questions about what could have caused so many people at the same workplace to develop symptoms within a relatively short period.

Health experts say outbreaks involving nausea and vomiting can be caused by several factors, including contaminated food, viruses such as norovirus or toxins produced by certain bacteria.

However, determining the source typically requires investigators to interview patients, examine their recent meals and potentially collect laboratory samples.

Officials have not confirmed that contaminated food was responsible, and there has been no announcement linking the illnesses to products sold in Walmart stores.

The Wilson County Emergency Management Agency said the incident remains under review and that additional information was not yet available.

As of Monday, October 12, health authorities had not publicly identified a particular food, restaurant, supplier or infectious agent connected to the incident.

The investigation continues as officials work to determine what triggered the sudden illnesses and whether additional precautions are necessary to protect workers at the facility.
