70-Year-Old Man Stabbed in Face During Terrifying Random Attack at Publix

A routine grocery shopping trip turned into a terrifying ordeal for a 70-year-old Florida man who was allegedly stabbed in the face by a complete stranger inside a Publix supermarket.

Even more disturbing, police say the suspect admitted he wanted to kill someone because he disliked people he believed were born in the 1960s.

Ramsey Thomas Lyons, 47, was arrested Saturday, October 10, after the unprovoked attack at a Publix on Tamiami Trail in Punta Gorda, about 100 miles south of Tampa.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the elderly victim was walking through a grocery aisle when he suddenly felt what seemed like a powerful punch to the left side of his face.

When he turned around, he reportedly saw Lyons standing nearby with a box cutter in his hand.

The victim touched his face and realized he was bleeding. Investigators say Lyons then attempted to strike him a second time before the injured man managed to escape and rush toward the customer service desk for help.

Punta Gorda police arrived shortly before 4 p.m. and spotted Lyons near the store entrance with his hands resting on his head, apparently surrendering.

Officers recovered a box cutter from the grocery aisle, while surveillance footage reportedly showed Lyons moving through the store before the attack.

What the suspect allegedly told investigators afterward was even more alarming.

According to the arrest affidavit, Lyons claimed he had been thinking about killing someone for two days and entered the supermarket specifically intending to commit murder.

He reportedly admitted he had never met the victim and selected him at random because the older man looked like someone from the 1960s, an era Lyons claimed to dislike.

Lyons allegedly told investigators he wanted to “ace him out,” later explaining that he meant to kill him.

“I just pulled it out of my pocket and stuck it in his neck,” Lyons reportedly told police.

He also claimed to have an undiagnosed mental illness, although authorities have not established whether any medical condition contributed to the alleged attack.

The victim suffered a deep cut measuring approximately four to six inches, extending from his left cheek near his mouth, along his jaw and toward his neck. He also sustained another smaller neck injury.

He was transported to a hospital in Port Charlotte, where doctors treated his wounds with multiple stitches. Authorities indicated he was in stable condition and expected to recover.

The seemingly random violence stunned people in the surrounding community.

One woman who works near the supermarket told local reporters it was frightening to imagine someone being attacked without warning while simply buying groceries.

Lyons was booked into the Charlotte County Jail on a charge of aggravated battery against a person age 65 or older. Records also show previous battery-related arrests in 2023 and 2025, although those earlier allegations are separate from the current case.

He has pleaded not guilty and was reported to be held without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 16.

Investigators have not identified any previous connection between the suspect and victim, and the older man appears to have been targeted solely because of how Lyons perceived his age.
