Five people were found dead inside a suburban Chicago home in what police believe was a murder-suicide involving several members of the same family, leaving neighbors stunned by the tragedy.
The discovery was made late Sunday, October 18, at a home in Mundelein, Illinois, approximately 35 miles northwest of downtown Chicago.
According to the Mundelein Police Department, officers responded to the residence in the 200 block of Wellington Avenue around 11:45 p.m. after a concerned relative requested a welfare check.
The family member had been unable to contact one of the people inside the home and became worried about their safety.
When officers entered the residence through an unlocked door, they discovered five adults dead in different rooms.
The deceased included three men and two women, all of whom appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds.
Investigators recovered two handguns from the property and began examining evidence to determine exactly what had happened.
Police said their preliminary investigation indicates that four of the deceased were related, while the fifth had been involved in a domestic relationship with the person believed to have carried out the shootings.
Two of the individuals lived at the residence, while the others were visiting or otherwise present when the incident occurred.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed the identities of all five individuals or explained what may have led to the violence.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office began conducting autopsies Monday to formally establish the victims’ identities and determine their causes and manners of death.
Deputy Police Chief Rick Wilfenger said investigators have found no previous emergency calls or documented police encounters involving the residents of the home.
Police also emphasized that the tragedy appears to be an isolated incident and that there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the surrounding community.
For neighbors who had known the family for years, the discovery was particularly difficult to comprehend.
Several residents told local news stations that the couple who lived at the home were retired veterinarians who had operated an animal clinic and were well regarded throughout the neighborhood.
Samuel Escobedo, a longtime neighbor, remembered the couple as warm and welcoming people who treated him with kindness when he first moved into the area.
He recalled seeing them enjoying music together and described them as a lovely family.
Escobedo also told ABC 7 Chicago that he remembered hearing several loud noises around midday Sunday but initially believed they were firecrackers.
“We heard firecrackers. Didn’t pay much attention to it; thought it was kids or something,” he said.
Authorities have not confirmed whether those sounds were connected to the deaths or established the precise time of the shootings.
Another neighbor described the woman who lived at the house as friendly and approachable, someone who regularly waved and stopped to chat with people nearby.
Rosa Bernel, who previously worked with the couple at their veterinary clinic, remembered them as exceptionally kind employers.
“The best bosses I had in my whole life,” she told ABC 7.
The deaths have shaken Mundelein, a community of approximately 30,000 residents in Lake County where neighbors say serious violent incidents are uncommon.
As investigators worked at the scene Monday, police tape surrounded the home while evidence technicians examined the property and nearby vehicles.
Residents began leaving flowers and candles outside the house in memory of those who died.
Detectives from the Mundelein Police Department are working alongside the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and the Lake County Coroner’s Office to reconstruct the events leading up to the tragedy.
Investigators are expected to review forensic evidence, interview relatives and examine the relationships among those involved as they work to establish a possible motive.
Police have not announced a final timeline or publicly identified the person believed responsible.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Mundelein Police Department at 847-968-4600.
