A night of excitement at a popular carnival in Mexico turned into tragedy when an 18-year-old woman fell from a high-speed amusement ride, leaving witnesses horrified and authorities investigating whether a safety restraint failed.
Gabriela Rodríguez Tezoco died after falling from a swinging, spinning attraction known as “The Pendulum” during the Traditional Festival of Cabo San Lucas on Tuesday evening, October 20.
The accident was captured on video by witnesses, with footage appearing to show Gabriela’s shoulder restraint lifting while the ride was still moving.
Moments later, the teenager fell from her seat, prompting a frantic emergency response at the crowded fairgrounds.
Paramedics from the Mexican Red Cross and local emergency services rushed to help Gabriela before transporting her to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save her, she died from her injuries early Wednesday, October 21.
The tragedy has shaken the coastal community of Cabo San Lucas, a popular vacation destination in Mexico’s Baja California Sur state that attracts thousands of American tourists each year.
As videos of the accident spread across social media, disturbing questions emerged about how Gabriela could have fallen from an attraction designed to keep passengers secured during rapid movement.
One recording appears to show the red over-the-shoulder restraint rising as the ride swings and rotates. Another angle captures the immediate aftermath as someone rushes toward the injured teenager.
Although the footage has raised concerns about a possible equipment malfunction, investigators have not confirmed why Gabriela came out of her seat.
The ride was part of a temporary amusement area installed for the annual festival, with attractions operated by independent companies rather than a permanent theme park.
Following the accident, municipal officials immediately suspended the ride’s operation and secured the surrounding area.
Authorities also ordered safety inspections of the other attractions at the festival, examining whether they met the necessary operating requirements.
The Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office has opened a formal investigation, with specialists reviewing the ride’s mechanical components, safety restraints and installation procedures.
Investigators are also examining inspection records and operating documentation to determine whether any safety rules were violated.
The investigation has already prompted a significant change within the local government.
Following Gabriela’s death, officials appointed Diego Camacho Hale as acting director of the Los Cabos Civil Protection and Risk Management Department, replacing Francisco Cota Márquez while the investigation continues.
Municipal authorities said the administrative change was intended to ensure transparency and give investigators access to relevant records.
The decision has drawn additional attention because the department reportedly inspected the festival’s amusement rides just days before the fatal accident.
Investigators will now have to determine whether those inspections were adequate and whether any warning signs were missed.
No criminal charges have been publicly announced, and officials have not established whether the accident resulted from mechanical failure, operator error or another cause.
While authorities search for answers, Gabriela’s family and former classmates are mourning a young woman who had only recently graduated from high school.
Gabriela attended Colegio de Bachilleres Plantel 10 in Cabo San Lucas, where she was remembered for her warm personality and beautiful smile.
She had graduated as part of the school’s 2023–2026 class, making her death particularly heartbreaking for friends who had expected to celebrate new beginnings alongside her.
Following the tragedy, the school released an emotional tribute describing Gabriela as a kind and caring young woman who left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
The message expressed condolences to her family and recalled the happiness she brought to those around her.
Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez also addressed the tragedy publicly, pausing the festival’s activities to express sympathy for Gabriela’s loved ones.
“It could have been any of us,” the mayor said, urging residents to come together in support of the grieving family.
He promised that municipal authorities would cooperate fully with the investigation and provide assistance to Gabriela’s relatives.
The accident has renewed concerns about the safety of temporary carnival attractions, particularly large rides that swing riders high into the air or rotate them upside down.
Such attractions depend on properly functioning restraints, careful maintenance and trained operators to protect passengers throughout each ride cycle.
Unlike permanently installed roller coasters and amusement park attractions, traveling carnival rides must be repeatedly assembled, inspected and dismantled as they move between locations.
That makes proper installation and regular safety inspections especially important, although investigators have not determined whether those factors contributed to Gabriela’s death.
For now, the attraction remains shut down as authorities examine the evidence and work to establish exactly what happened.
Local Civil Protection officials have also urged people to avoid sharing the graphic footage of the accident out of respect for Gabriela and her grieving family.
What should have been an enjoyable evening at a traditional community festival has instead left an entire city mourning an 18-year-old whose life was just beginning.
As investigators continue examining the ride and its safety systems, Gabriela’s loved ones are waiting for answers about how a night of celebration ended in such a devastating loss.
