A Florida woman’s suspicions about her boyfriend’s alleged infidelity spiraled into a late-night confrontation that ended with another woman hospitalized, an attempted murder charge and a startling remark about “karma,” according to investigators.
Katherine Dale Kelly, 24, of Cocoa, is accused of tracking down her boyfriend, Elijah Baker, after discovering he had taken her Volkswagen to meet another woman in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 24.
But rather than confront him over the phone, investigators say Kelly ordered an Uber, armed herself with a pink-and-black Glock handgun and headed straight for his location.
What happened next has left her facing multiple serious felony charges and the possibility of decades behind bars.
According to an arrest affidavit from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Baker picked up Angel Adenau around 1:20 a.m. before driving to a secluded grassy area near Bamboo Avenue in Port St. John.
Unbeknownst to the pair, Kelly had allegedly been monitoring Baker’s location and was making her way toward them.
Investigators say Kelly approached the parked Volkswagen, walked toward the passenger side and fired a single shot through the window, striking Adenau in the left shoulder.
Baker immediately drove Adenau back to her residence, where emergency services were contacted. She was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne for treatment.
Although Adenau survived, authorities have not publicly disclosed her current condition.
The investigation soon uncovered troubling details about the events leading up to the shooting, including text messages that prosecutors could use to establish whether the confrontation was planned.
According to detectives, Kelly had repeatedly accused Baker of cheating and sent him a message suggesting she intended to shoot someone before arriving at the scene.
The couple reportedly had a history of arguments over suspected infidelity, with investigators indicating that Kelly believed Baker had previously been involved with the same woman.
During questioning, Kelly initially maintained that she had acted in self-defense. She claimed Baker had taken her vehicle without permission and that she fired when the car began moving as she approached.
Baker, however, reportedly disputed her account, telling investigators that Kelly had given him permission to use the Volkswagen.
Detectives say Kelly’s explanation also changed as the interview continued.
She allegedly acknowledged that she wanted to “make a point” because she suspected Baker was cheating on her again.
Then came another disturbing revelation.
When investigators asked whether she felt guilty about shooting Adenau, Kelly reportedly invoked “karma,” suggesting the other woman should have known Baker already had a girlfriend.
The affidavit also describes an unusual turn of events following the shooting. After driving Adenau home, Baker allegedly returned to the scene to pick up Kelly and take her back to their apartment.
Hours later, he reportedly sent Kelly a text message expressing his love for her and apologizing for what had happened.
Investigators subsequently recovered the pink-and-black Glock and a 9mm shell casing. They also examined messages from Baker’s cellphone, which they believe could provide important evidence about Kelly’s intentions before the confrontation.
Kelly was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, shooting into an occupied vehicle and using a firearm during the commission of a felony.
She remains in the Brevard County Jail without bond, according to reports published this week.
Kelly made an initial court appearance on October 25 and was appointed a public defender. Her arraignment is scheduled for November 24.
The charges carry potentially severe prison penalties under Florida law, particularly because a firearm was allegedly discharged during the incident.
For now, Kelly remains behind bars as the criminal case moves forward. She is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
