Husband and Wife Drown in Kayaking Tragedy After Desperate Cries for Help

A married couple’s Halloween outing on an Arizona river ended in heartbreak after both drowned while floating downstream in an inflatable kayak, with witnesses reporting that the husband was desperately shouting that his wife couldn’t swim.

Cindy Bowers, 68, and her husband, Anthony Beringer, 59, were enjoying an afternoon on the lower Salt River near Phoenix on Saturday, October 31, when their trip suddenly turned into a life-threatening emergency.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, authorities received a frantic call around 1:30 p.m. reporting that a man was yelling for help as he and a woman floated downstream.

The man was reportedly shouting that his wife could not swim, raising immediate fears that she was in serious danger.

Moments later, the woman disappeared beneath the water. Her husband also went underwater and failed to resurface, prompting an urgent search by emergency responders.

Deputies launched a rescue operation involving a helicopter and an airboat, searching the river for the missing couple.

Tragically, rescuers located Bowers’ body shortly after 2 p.m., approximately 40 minutes after the initial emergency call.

The search for her husband continued until around 3 p.m., when authorities discovered Beringer’s body farther upstream.

Neither survived.

Investigators later confirmed that the couple had been sharing a single inflatable kayak and that neither was wearing a life jacket when the incident occurred.

Authorities have not explained exactly how the pair ended up in the water or whether their kayak overturned, became unstable or encountered an unexpected obstacle.

The tragedy unfolded during a weekend of unusually heavy rainfall across the Phoenix metropolitan area, where storms brought flooding and hazardous conditions to parts of the region.

However, officials have not established whether the weather, river conditions or stronger currents contributed to the couple’s deaths.

The lower Salt River is a popular destination for kayaking, tubing and other outdoor recreation, drawing visitors who want to enjoy the desert scenery and relatively calm stretches of water.

But the river can also present hidden dangers, including changing depths, underwater obstacles and currents that may be difficult to judge from the surface.

The latest tragedy follows several previous drownings along the Salt River, including two deaths over Memorial Day weekend earlier this year. Authorities reported that neither victim in those separate incidents had been wearing a life jacket.

Water safety officials have repeatedly urged visitors to wear properly fitted life jackets, regardless of their swimming abilities, and to check river conditions before entering the water.

For Bowers and Beringer, what began as a Halloween afternoon together ended in a devastating loss that has left investigators searching for answers.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office continues investigating the circumstances surrounding the drownings. No further details about the couple’s final moments have been released.
