Homeless Man Survives After Falling Asleep in Dumpster and Getting Dumped into Garbage Truck

In a real-life survival story that sounds straight out of a movie, an Alabama man narrowly escaped death after being crushed inside a garbage truck — not once, but twice — according to local officials.

The incident unfolded last week in Jackson, where authorities believe the man, who is thought to be homeless, had climbed into a dumpster to stay warm overnight. Unaware he was inside, a garbage truck picked up the dumpster and emptied it into the vehicle.

“I’ve been associated with the fire department for 40 years. We’ve never had a situation like this come up,” Jackson Fire Chief John Brown told local station WKRG.

The man’s survival came down to a remarkable stroke of luck. The garbage truck had already made stops at a KFC and a Hampton Inn, meaning officials believe the man was compacted twice during the route. It wasn’t until the driver arrived at a Popeyes in the early morning hours that the situation came to light.

When the driver discovered the restaurant’s gates were locked and stepped out of the truck, he heard noises coming from the back of the vehicle. That unexpected delay likely saved the man’s life, officials said.

Emergency crews were called to the scene around 5:30 a.m. Volunteer firefighter Mendy Boldin said responders were bracing for the worst when they arrived.

“We were all shocked because we thought we were going to have to do serious trauma care to get him out,” Boldin said. “But he was fine.”

The man was taken to a hospital in Mobile, Alabama, for further evaluation. Remarkably, he survived the ordeal without life-threatening injuries.

Boldin called the outcome nothing short of a miracle. “That was a God thing,” she said.

While rare, similar survival stories have surfaced in recent years, leaving fire officials across the country stunned. Even so, Jackson firefighters say this case stands apart — a once-in-a-career rescue that could have ended very differently.
