Today Show Star Drops Out of Olympics After Mom is ‘Abducted’

Savannah Guthrie is stepping away from her high-profile role at the Winter Olympics this week as the investigation into her mother’s disappearance takes a disturbing turn.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen Saturday night at her home in Arizona. By Sunday around noon, a relative contacted police after realizing she hadn’t been heard from, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.

Page Six first reported that the longtime Today show anchor will no longer co-host Friday’s opening ceremony for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, which run from February 6 to 22.

The situation surrounding her mother’s disappearance has rapidly escalated. Sheriff Nanos told reporters Monday that investigators now consider Nancy’s home a full crime scene.

“We believe… that we do, in fact, have a crime,” he said. “She did not leave on her own. We know that.”

Nancy, who is confirmed to be Guthrie’s mother, is described as mentally sharp but dealing with physical limitations that make independent movement difficult. She was first reported missing after a member of her church noticed she didn’t arrive for Sunday services and alerted family members. Relatives spent time searching the home before calling 911.

Investigators say they are not ruling out foul play and have already brought in the department’s criminal investigation unit due to the seriousness of the circumstances.

NBC has not publicly commented on Guthrie’s decision to pull out of the broadcast or on the ongoing search.

Officials have released a missing-person bulletin as the nationwide attention on the case grows.
