What was supposed to be a routine balloon launch turned into a wild and chaotic scene after a hot air balloon slammed into a casino in Northern California.

The incident happened Monday afternoon at Sky River Casino in Elk Grove, when strong, unexpected winds sent the balloon off course just moments after takeoff.

According to the Elk Grove Police Department, the balloon made an “unplanned launch” around 12:15 p.m. after wind conditions suddenly shifted. From there, things quickly spiraled.

The balloon struck the side of the casino and even clipped a power line before drifting away and eventually coming down in a nearby field southeast of Grant Line Road.

Dramatic footage captured the moment the balloon struggled in the air, hitting a tree before slamming into the building — then somehow continuing to fly for several minutes.

At one point, the balloon even floated over the top of the casino before regaining some altitude. Reports say it stayed airborne for roughly 20 minutes before finally landing around 12:29 p.m.

Despite the chaos, there was a surprising outcome.

Officials confirmed the pilot — who was the only person on board — was not injured.

In a statement, Sky River Casino said the pilot made the decision to go into free flight due to the sudden heavy winds, following standard safety procedures.

The balloon had been part of a ceremony marking the start of construction on a new resort at the casino, making the incident even more unexpected for those watching.

One local resident described the moment as surreal, saying it looked like a giant balloon struggling in the wind — similar to watching a balloon drift away at a birthday party, but on a much larger and more dangerous scale.

Authorities say both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and are expected to investigate what went wrong.
