A late-night boat ride turned tragic in South Carolina, leaving a young college cadet dead and several others injured.

Evan Greenleigh, 19, has been identified as the victim who died after a boat crashed into a dock in Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant on April 25.

Greenleigh was a cadet at The Citadel, where he was part of the Corps of Cadets Class of 2029. School officials confirmed his death, with President Glenn M. Walters calling him “an exceptional classmate and teammate” who will be deeply missed.

According to reports, seven people were on the boat when it slammed into a dock late Saturday night. Greenleigh was pronounced dead at the scene, while the others on board—including the boat’s operator—were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Officials have not confirmed whether anyone was thrown into the water during the crash.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office later said Greenleigh died from blunt force injuries sustained in the accident, which happened in an inlet off King Street.

Originally from Maryland, Greenleigh was a member of Echo Company and also played on The Citadel’s tennis team, where he was known among peers as both a strong competitor and a dedicated teammate.

Following the deadly crash, an investigation has been launched by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to determine exactly what led to the accident.
