A routine training ride turned into a life-altering nightmare for a veteran jockey after a freak accident left him fighting for survival.
Shane McGovern, 67, has had both of his legs amputated following a horrifying incident at a training facility in North Queensland, Australia earlier this month.
According to reports, McGovern was riding a 9-year-old horse named Reformist when the animal suddenly suffered what’s believed to have been an aneurysm and collapsed—pinning him underneath.
What followed was unimaginable.
McGovern was trapped beneath the dead horse for nearly six hours, unable to move. By the time he was discovered at the Charters Towers facility on April 8, the prolonged pressure had cut off circulation to his legs.
He also suffered a dislocated shoulder and multiple broken ribs in the ordeal.
Despite being rushed for medical treatment, the damage was severe. About 10 days after the accident, McGovern had his first leg amputated. Soon after, doctors were forced to amputate the second.
The devastating update was confirmed by the Australian Jockeys Association, which shared a message of support for the longtime rider.
“We are sending all our prayers and love to you Shane and your family. Keep fighting,” the organization said.
Even in the face of such life-changing injuries, McGovern’s wife, Kim, has remained hopeful about his recovery, pointing to his resilience and determination.
“It won’t slow him down,” she said. “It might just be a bump in the road.”
The racing community has rallied around McGovern, with Racing Queensland donating $50,000 toward his recovery, along with additional support from fellow jockey groups.
Over the course of his career, McGovern recorded more than 200 wins and hundreds of place finishes across nearly 1,900 starts—earning respect as a seasoned and dedicated competitor.
The incident has also cast a spotlight on the dangers of the sport. Earlier this month, two other Queensland jockeys were injured in separate training incidents, including one rider who suffered a broken collarbone and another who was left with a concussion.
