A heartbreaking accident in Nebraska has left a 5-year-old boy hospitalized with serious internal injuries after his father accidentally ran over a cardboard box the child was hiding inside while backing out of the driveway.

Police say the terrifying incident happened around 4 p.m. Wednesday at the family’s home in North Platte.

According to investigators, little Bridger Hughes had been playing inside a cardboard box behind the family vehicle when his father unknowingly backed over it while leaving the garage.

Authorities said Bridger suffered major upper-body injuries in the accident.

Emergency crews rushed the boy to Great Plains Health before doctors determined his injuries were so severe that he needed to be airlifted to a children’s hospital in Omaha for specialized treatment.

A fundraiser created by Bridger’s grandmother says the young boy is now battling serious internal injuries as doctors work around the clock to help him recover.

“The doctors and nurses are working tirelessly to help him heal, but his recovery will be a long and difficult journey,” the family wrote.

Bridger’s parents, Caitlyn Walther and Udell Hughes, have remained at their son’s bedside as the devastated family tries to cope with the emotional nightmare.

Loved ones say the family is also facing growing financial pressure from travel expenses, hotel stays, meals, and time away from work while staying near the hospital.

“The emotional and financial toll of this situation is overwhelming,” the fundraiser states.

Police have not announced any criminal charges connected to the incident.

Family members have since taken to social media asking supporters across the country to pray for Bridger’s recovery.

“Please pray Bridger to heal and recover completely,” one relative wrote online. “Also pray for his parents as they are doing their best to stay strong.”

The family also stressed that the tragedy was a devastating accident.

“They are a good family. Accidents happen,” the post added.

Another relative admitted the horrifying ordeal has completely shaken the family.

“I’ve probably prayed more in the last 24 hours than I have in my entire life,” the family member shared.
