Legendary actor Ian McKellen has spent more than 60 years entertaining audiences around the world, but during a recent late-night interview, the beloved star got surprisingly candid about something far more personal — death.

The 86-year-old acting icon, best known for playing Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings, appeared this week on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and delivered a mix of humor, honesty, and wisdom that quickly got people talking online.

During a playful questionnaire segment, host Stephen Colbert asked McKellen a deep question many people spend their lives wondering about.

“What happens when we die?” Colbert asked.

Without missing a beat, McKellen immediately cracked a joke that sent the audience into laughter.

“Well, I hope there will be a funeral,” he replied.

The actor then revealed that his body has actually been left to medical research after his death.

“In my case, there won’t be a funeral because everything is left to medical research, if they want it,” McKellen explained.

“And when they’re finished with you, I think they grind your bones down and give the family something that is going to be thrown into the River Thames.”

But after the laughter faded, the legendary actor became more reflective and serious.

When Colbert pressed him about whether he believes in life after death, McKellen admitted he does not.

“No, I will not,” he said when asked if he believes he’ll continue living in some way after death.

“Any more than before I was born, I wasn’t alive.”

He continued with a thoughtful perspective that left the audience silent.

“So this is just — life has just been a little interlude between absolute nothingness.”

Fans online praised McKellen’s honesty and calm outlook on mortality, with many calling the moment both emotional and strangely comforting.

The beloved actor has long been admired not only for his incredible performances on screen and stage, but also for his outspoken personality and thoughtful approach to life.

McKellen publicly came out as gay in 1988 and has since become a major LGBTQ+ icon and activist alongside his celebrated acting career.

Even now, decades into his career, McKellen continues working and is expected to reprise his iconic role as Gandalf in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
