A horrifying scuba diving tragedy in the Maldives has left five tourists dead after they vanished while exploring underwater caves nearly 165 feet below the ocean’s surface.

The group disappeared Thursday morning during a dive near the Vaavu Atoll, a popular diving destination located about 40 miles from the Maldivian capital of Malé.

According to officials, the divers had boarded the luxury diving yacht Duke of York for the excursion but never resurfaced.

The Maldives Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre received reports of the missing group around 1:45 p.m. local time, triggering a massive search effort involving both aircraft and rescue teams at sea.

Authorities later confirmed the divers are believed to have died while attempting to explore deep underwater cave systems roughly 164 feet below the surface.

Among the victims were respected marine biologist Monica Montefalcone and her daughter, Giorgia Sommacal.

Montefalcone worked as an associate professor at the University of Genoa in Italy and was widely respected in marine science circles.

The other victims were identified as diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti, university graduate Federico Gualtieri, and research assistant Muriel Oddenino.

Officials have not yet released an official cause of death.

During the desperate recovery effort, rescue divers located one body deep inside a cave system roughly 196 feet underwater.

Authorities believe the remaining four divers were trapped inside the same dangerous cave network, which reportedly stretches nearly 200 feet long.

Officials described the recovery mission as an extremely high-risk operation because of the depth, cave conditions, and worsening weather.

At one point, rough conditions reportedly threatened to delay parts of the rescue operation altogether.

Italian officials confirmed the country’s ambassador traveled to Malé to assist local authorities and support the victims’ grieving families.

The University of Genoa also released a statement expressing “deepest condolences” following the tragedy.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Genoa said the city was mourning alongside the families, friends, colleagues, and students affected by the devastating loss.

The Maldives National Defence Force confirmed a Coast Guard ship remained stationed near the dive site as the dangerous operation continued.

Authorities are still investigating exactly what caused the deadly underwater disaster.

  1. Please no ridiculous comments that they died doing what they loved. I love driving, but that doesn’t mean that I would be happy getting blown away by an 18-wheeler driven by someone named “Singh” with a California CDL.
