A Brooklyn park turned into a terrifying crash scene Sunday evening after a woman driving a three-wheeled motorcycle allegedly lost control and plowed into pedestrians, injuring 12 people.
The crash happened around 6:40 p.m. at Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene, according to police.
Authorities said 53-year-old Neisha Atkinson was driving a three-wheeled Can-Am trike when she allegedly drove into the park and struck multiple people in her path.
The NYPD said seven men and five women, ranging in age from 36 to 73, were injured in the crash. Atkinson was also hurt. Police said all of the injuries were non-life-threatening.
Atkinson has since been charged with two counts of reckless endangerment, reckless driving, failure to yield and improper licensing. She was hospitalized after the crash but is recovering.
The aftermath left parkgoers stunned. Photos from the scene showed the three-wheeled motorcycle surrounded by debris as police officers and shocked bystanders gathered nearby.
Witness Kim Tammy described the frightening moment the trike came through the park.
“She turned and she hit everybody over here,” Tammy said. “Everybody that was sitting here went up in the air.”
Another witness told PIX11 he saw the motorcycle hit two people “at the same time” and believed one person had a “gash in the back of their head.”
“It could’ve been worse,” the witness said.
Mike Smith, who said he knows Atkinson, defended her character after the crash.
“I’m telling you she’s a good person,” he told WABC. “She’s not a bad person.”
Authorities said the crash remains under investigation.
