A pregnant woman allegedly gave birth while handcuffed inside a Brooklyn courtroom after spending more than 24 hours in police custody — and now outrage is exploding across New York over the shocking incident.
According to multiple legal aid organizations, 33-year-old Samantha Randazzo went into labor Friday while waiting for arraignment on low-level charges inside a New York courtroom.
Advocates claim Randazzo was forced to deliver her baby on a courtroom bench while restrained and surrounded by police officers, prosecutors, and court staff.
The disturbing allegations have sparked demands for investigations into the New York City Police Department and New York’s court system.
In a blistering statement, several public defender groups accused authorities of denying Randazzo “adequate medical care, privacy, or dignity” during one of the most vulnerable moments of her life.
“She deserved care, compassion, safety, and dignity,” the statement said. “Instead, she was subjected to trauma and humiliation in full public view.”
The organizations also alleged that some people inside the courtroom were laughing and joking during the chaotic ordeal.
However, Randazzo’s attorney, Wynton Sharpe, pushed back on parts of the claims and said court officers acted quickly once it became clear she was in labor.
“She didn’t have to say anything. We were like, ‘Oh OK, this is happening, like, now,’” Sharpe told The New York Times.
He described the moment as both “joyful and sad” because of the circumstances surrounding the birth.
According to officials, Randazzo had been arrested Thursday on drug possession and trespassing charges after police allegedly found her on the roof of a Brooklyn housing complex without permission.
Officers claimed they discovered small amounts of heroin and cocaine during a search.
Because she reportedly had an active warrant, she was not eligible for a desk appearance ticket and remained in custody.
Authorities say Randazzo was first taken to a nearby hospital while nine months pregnant before eventually being discharged and transported back into police custody roughly 30 hours later for arraignment in Brooklyn court.
That’s when she reportedly went into labor.
Legal advocacy groups blasted the situation as “a profound moral failure” and accused the criminal justice system of treating pregnant women in custody inhumanely.
“No person should ever be forced to give birth in handcuffs or endure labor while restrained, exposed, and denied basic medical care and human dignity,” the groups said.
“A child entered the world in a courtroom while their mother was in chains,” the statement added. “New Yorkers should be outraged that this happened in our city in 2026.”
Meanwhile, court officials defended their response.
Al Baker, a spokesperson for New York’s Office of Court Administration, said officers acted “with swift professionalism to ensure the safety and sanctity of life.”
“We are delighted both mother and baby are well,” Baker said.
The legal aid groups are now demanding an immediate investigation into everyone involved, including the NYPD, court officials, prosecutors, and staff members who were present during the incident.
They are also calling for a full review of how pregnant women in custody are treated moving forward.
