A 44-year-old cruise passenger miraculously survived 20 hours alone in the open ocean after jumping from a massive Royal Caribbean ship off the coast of Greece, only to give rescuers a bizarre explanation for her terrifying ordeal.
The woman, a citizen of El Salvador, went overboard from Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas early Friday, October 9, while the luxury liner was sailing through the Ionian Sea southwest of the Greek island of Zakynthos.
Her disappearance triggered a desperate international rescue operation involving coast guard patrol boats, military aircraft, nearby commercial ships, and the cruise liner itself.
For nearly an entire day, rescuers searched the vast stretch of ocean, hoping to locate the missing passenger before it was too late.
Then, against extraordinary odds, she was found alive.
Early Saturday morning, the cargo ship MSC Rossella III spotted the woman floating inside an orange life ring, still conscious after approximately 20 hours in the water.
The freighter immediately alerted rescue authorities, and a Greek coast guard patrol boat rushed to the location.
Dramatic footage released by the coast guard shows rescuers reaching toward the woman in the darkness and throwing her a rope before bringing her to safety.
But what she reportedly told authorities afterward was nearly as astonishing as her survival.
According to a Greek coast guard spokesperson speaking to Agence France-Presse, the woman claimed she deliberately jumped from the ship because “she wanted to disembark.”
The statement left serious questions about what led her to enter the water so far from shore.
Authorities have not established why she chose to leave the vessel in such a dangerous manner or what circumstances preceded the incident.
The massive Odyssey of the Seas stretches approximately 1,138 feet and can accommodate more than 4,000 passengers. The ship had departed Civitavecchia, near Rome, on October 4 for a seven-night Mediterranean cruise.
When the woman went missing, Greek authorities immediately mobilized two coast guard vessels, a Navy helicopter, and additional military aircraft to search the surrounding waters.
Nearby commercial ships were also redirected to help, while Odyssey of the Seas participated in the operation.
The woman was eventually located roughly 70 nautical miles southwest of Zakynthos, according to local reporting.
After being rescued, she received first aid and was transported to the port of Katakolo before being taken to a hospital in nearby Pyrgos.
Doctors conducted medical examinations, while a local prosecutor ordered a psychiatric evaluation to help authorities understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Her condition following treatment has not been fully disclosed, although officials confirmed she was conscious when rescuers found her.
Royal Caribbean said its crew launched search-and-rescue procedures after learning that a passenger had gone overboard and worked closely with Greek authorities throughout the emergency.
The cruise line also confirmed that its care team was providing assistance to the woman’s loved ones.
Although the circumstances of her decision remain under investigation, her survival after 20 hours in open water is remarkable.
The Greek coast guard is continuing its investigation into how and why she went overboard, while authorities work to determine exactly what happened during the hours before her disappearance.
