A peaceful fishing trip off the coast of Long Island turned into a terrifying encounter when a massive humpback whale suddenly launched itself out of the ocean and crashed into a boat carrying three family members.
The extraordinary moment, captured on video Saturday, October 10, shows the enormous marine mammal bursting through the surface just feet from the fishermen before slamming into their vessel with enough force to break open a hatch.
Steven Heid, of Plainview, New York, was fishing with his father-in-law and nephew, Oliver Samter, near Moriches Inlet, west of Fire Island, when they first spotted the whale feeding on a school of bunker fish about 300 yards away.
Heid told News 12 that they deliberately kept their distance, knowing how unpredictable whales can be when hunting for food.
But the enormous animal soon began swimming toward their boat.
Hoping to avoid injuring the whale with his propeller, Heid shut off the engine and remained stationary as the animal approached.
That’s when things took a frightening turn.
Samter began recording as fish scattered across the surface. Seconds later, the humpback erupted from the water and collided with the boat, sending the family into a panic.

“I was like, ‘Holy cow, what just happened?'” Samter recalled.
For a few terrifying moments, the fishermen feared the impact might have seriously damaged their vessel.
“I thought we might be going down, but the boat was OK, the whale was OK. It was just crazy,” Samter told News 12.
Fortunately, nobody aboard was injured, and the whale swam away following the collision. The boat also remained afloat despite the damaged hatch.
Humpback whales are among the largest animals in the ocean, with adults commonly weighing tens of thousands of pounds. Despite their enormous size, they can launch much of their bodies out of the water in a behavior known as breaching.
The reason for this particular leap remains unclear, although the whale had been feeding shortly before the collision.
Robert DiGiovanni, executive director and chief scientist of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, said the encounter highlights the importance of keeping a safe distance from marine wildlife.
New York’s Whale Awareness Act requires boaters to remain at least 300 feet away from whales. DiGiovanni said Heid appeared to have followed appropriate safety procedures by stopping his boat when the animal approached.
The dramatic encounter also comes as whale sightings have become increasingly common around Long Island.
Conservation experts say recovering populations of baitfish, including the menhaden known locally as bunker, have helped attract humpback whales back to coastal waters where sightings were once relatively rare.
That comeback is welcome news for wildlife lovers, but it also means boaters need to be especially cautious.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recommends staying at least 100 yards from large whales and avoiding sudden movements or attempts to approach the animals.
For Heid and his family, their fishing adventure turned into an unforgettable close encounter with one of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures.
Thankfully, both the fishermen and their unexpected visitor escaped without reported injuries, leaving behind an astonishing video that shows just how powerful and unpredictable nature can be.
