A 39-year-old father who agreed to cover a coworker’s shift at a meat-processing factory in Brazil lost his life in a horrifying workplace accident after becoming trapped inside an industrial ice-crushing machine.
Diego Fernando Gonzaga was working an early morning shift at HG Foods in Santa Luzia, near Belo Horizonte, on Monday, October 26, when the routine workday took a devastating turn. Emergency crews were called to the facility after Gonzaga became trapped in the machinery, setting off a desperate rescue operation that ultimately ended in tragedy.
In a particularly heartbreaking detail, the father of one was reportedly still conscious and speaking to colleagues as firefighters struggled to free him.
According to local authorities, Gonzaga had arrived at the factory around 5:30 a.m. to fill in for another employee in the refrigeration department. He normally worked in packaging and reportedly had limited experience with the equipment in the area where the accident occurred.
Just a few hours into his shift, something went terribly wrong.
At approximately 8 a.m., emergency responders received reports that a worker had fallen into an industrial machine used to crush ice during food production. When firefighters arrived, they found Gonzaga with his legs trapped inside the equipment.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, he remained responsive as rescue teams began working to release him.
Firefighters and emergency medical personnel used specialized hydraulic tools and cutting equipment to dismantle sections of the machine, hoping to free the trapped worker without causing further injuries.
But as the complicated rescue continued, Gonzaga’s condition suddenly deteriorated.
He suffered cardiac arrest while still trapped inside the machinery. Emergency medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but despite their efforts, he could not be saved.
The tragedy has devastated his family, who say Gonzaga had simply gone to work that morning expecting to return home like any other day.
His mother, Maria de Fatima, struggled to comprehend the loss of her son, describing the unbearable pain of receiving news that no parent should ever have to hear.
“My heart is shattered,” she said, according to local reporting.
“You receive the news that your child leaves home alive and healthy to go to work, and then you find out he is gone. It is very sad.”
The grieving mother revealed that the family had already endured an extraordinary amount of heartbreak in recent months, including the deaths of several relatives.
Now, she is facing another devastating loss.
“It is the children who should bury their parents, not parents burying their children,” she said.
Gonzaga, who had spent approximately two decades working in the food industry, leaves behind a 19-year-old daughter and a family struggling to understand how an ordinary shift ended so tragically.
Relatives remembered him as a cheerful, energetic man whose personality could brighten almost any room. His cousin, Mariana Alberto, said he was known for his love of music, singing and dancing, and had an enthusiasm for life that made him especially beloved among friends and family.
“He was very cheerful and was always singing and dancing,” she recalled. “He wanted to live—to live life to the fullest and be happy.”
Those memories have become particularly painful for relatives who knew Gonzaga as someone who worked hard to support his family and rarely missed an opportunity to enjoy himself.
The circumstances surrounding the accident are now under investigation by Brazilian authorities, who are working to establish how Gonzaga entered the machinery and whether proper workplace safety procedures were followed.
According to local reports, the factory specializes in poultry products, sausages and refrigeration operations. Industrial ice-crushing equipment is used during meat processing to help maintain appropriate temperatures.
Investigators have not publicly determined what caused Gonzaga to fall into the machine or whether equipment failure, inadequate safeguards or another factor contributed to the tragedy.
Authorities have also not announced any findings of wrongdoing against the company.
The incident has nevertheless raised serious questions about the risks faced by workers operating large industrial machinery, particularly when employees are assigned duties outside their usual departments.
Representatives for the factory had not publicly responded to requests for comment as of the initial reports.
Meanwhile, Gonzaga’s family has been left mourning a father, son and relative whose final hours were spent trying to complete an ordinary day’s work.
For his mother, the most painful reality is that her son left home early that morning with every expectation of returning.
Instead, the family received devastating news that would change their lives forever.
“He will be greatly missed,” she said. “We will never truly get over it. It is a huge loss.”
