A 42-year-old man was killed in a tragic late-night accident at a Massachusetts subway station after apparently losing his balance, falling onto the tracks and being struck by an approaching train.
The incident unfolded shortly before 1 a.m. Monday, October 26, at Central Square station in Cambridge, where authorities say the man appeared unsteady on his feet moments before the fatal fall.
But investigators have revealed another troubling detail: The victim may have been sleeping inside the station shortly before the accident, raising questions about what caused him to lose his footing.
According to Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Transit Police, the man was standing on the northbound platform at approximately 12:50 a.m. when he suddenly fell into the track area.
An approaching Red Line train subsequently struck him, leaving him with fatal injuries. Emergency personnel responded to the station, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan said preliminary findings suggest the victim had been unsteady before falling. Authorities are investigating whether he had been asleep inside the station beforehand, although they have not determined what caused him to fall.
The man’s identity has not been publicly released, and officials have provided few details about his circumstances before the accident.
Investigators have emphasized that they do not suspect foul play, describing the death as an apparent tragedy rather than a deliberate or criminal act.
“This appears to be a very sad tragic event,” Sullivan said in a statement, expressing sympathy for the victim’s loved ones.
The transit police superintendent also extended condolences on behalf of the entire MBTA organization, acknowledging the devastating loss experienced by the man’s family and friends.
The fatal accident forced transportation officials to temporarily suspend Red Line service through the affected area while emergency crews responded and investigators examined the scene.
Shuttle buses replaced train service between Park Street and Harvard Square for the remainder of the overnight service period, disrupting travel for passengers who rely on the subway during late-night hours.
Regular Red Line operations resumed shortly after 5 a.m. Monday, following the completion of the initial emergency response.
The incident is being investigated by MBTA Transit Police detectives in cooperation with the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, which routinely assists in investigations involving sudden or unexpected deaths.
Although the circumstances suggest an accidental fall, authorities have not established whether a medical condition, loss of balance or another factor contributed to the tragedy.
The possibility that the victim had been sleeping inside the station remains part of the preliminary investigation, and officials have not disclosed whether surveillance footage or witness accounts provided additional insight into his final moments.
The death has also renewed attention to the dangers associated with subway platforms, where passengers can face serious risks if they fall into the path of an approaching train.
For now, investigators are continuing to piece together the man’s movements before the accident as they work to determine exactly what happened.
Authorities have not announced any criminal charges or identified another person believed to have been involved.
