King Charles may be battling cancer, but insiders say he has absolutely no plans to step aside and let Prince William take the throne anytime soon.
Behind palace walls, the 77-year-old monarch is reportedly making it crystal clear that he is still in charge — and that his eldest son needs to stop acting like the crown is already his.
According to insiders, Charles has no intention of surrendering the throne after waiting virtually his entire life to become king following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.
“Charles has made it clear he’s still very much the top dog,” a source claimed, adding that Prince William “needs to know his place.”
The alleged royal rift comes as William, 43, has been taking on a larger public role while his father continues treatment for the undisclosed form of cancer he revealed in 2024. But according to reports, Charles is not thrilled with whispers that the future king is already preparing to take over.
Sources say the monarch believes William needs to “bide his time” instead of appearing eager to inherit the throne.
That reportedly hasn’t gone over well with the prince.
Insiders claim William is increasingly frustrated behind the scenes and feels stuck in limbo as Charles refuses to loosen his grip on the monarchy despite ongoing health concerns.
The alleged tension has only intensified because William has already stepped into many high-profile royal duties alongside wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, leading some royal watchers to speculate that he’s unofficially operating as king-in-waiting.
Still, Charles reportedly sees things very differently.
After spending more than 70 years waiting to wear the crown, insiders say the king has no desire to walk away now that he finally has it.
“Charles waited a lifetime for this,” one palace source reportedly said earlier this year. “When he steps back, it will be entirely on his terms.”
The king has recently appeared more active in public despite his health battle, including a high-profile meeting with Donald Trump during a U.S. visit last month.
While Buckingham Palace has continued to project stability, the latest claims are fueling growing speculation about what’s really happening behind closed palace doors — and whether tensions between father and son are quietly reaching a boiling point.
