A routine bus trip turned into a nightmare inferno after a passenger coach collided head-on with a fuel tanker carrying diesel, leaving 16 people dead and several others fighting for their lives in Indonesia.

The devastating crash happened Wednesday afternoon along the busy Trans-Sumatra Highway in South Sumatra, where a packed intercity bus suddenly burst into flames after smashing into the tanker truck traveling in the opposite direction.

According to Indonesian police, the bus had been transporting passengers from Lubuklinggau toward Medan when disaster struck around 12:39 p.m. local time. Authorities believe the driver swerved while attempting an emergency maneuver moments before the violent collision.

What followed was pure chaos.

The impact triggered a massive fireball that quickly swallowed both vehicles, trapping terrified passengers inside as thick black smoke poured into the sky. Witnesses watched helplessly as flames ripped through the bus in seconds.

Fourteen passengers were killed in the horrifying blaze along with the tanker driver and a crew member, officials confirmed. Many of the victims were reportedly burned alive inside the wreckage before rescuers could reach them.

Emergency crews spent hours battling the intense flames and trying to recover bodies from the charred remains scattered across the highway. Photos from the scene showed firefighters spraying down the twisted metal skeleton of the bus while debris littered the roadway.

Officials said there were 20 passengers onboard at the time of the crash.

Miraculously, four people survived the fiery disaster. Three victims suffered severe burns, while another escaped with minor injuries. All were rushed to a nearby health clinic for treatment.

Authorities said the tanker truck was carrying diesel fuel, which likely intensified the explosion and deadly fire after the collision.

Rescue operations were especially difficult because several victims were trapped inside the vehicles as the flames raged out of control.

The horrifying accident has stunned locals across the region and once again raised concerns over deadly highway crashes involving fuel trucks and overcrowded roads.

Investigators are still working to determine exactly what caused the catastrophic collision.
