Former South Carolina football star Stephen Garcia is facing the toughest battle of his life after revealing he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer at just 38 years old.
The former Gamecocks quarterback shared the heartbreaking news with fans in an emotional social media post, admitting he wasn’t exactly eager to go public with the diagnosis — but hoped his story could help save lives.
“I wasn’t overly excited to share this news, but it is what it is,” Garcia wrote. “We have a great team of doctors and staff who are confident we can beat this. That’s the only option.”
Garcia also urged people not to ignore warning signs when it comes to their health, especially as more younger adults are being diagnosed with serious illnesses.
“If there’s one lesson to be learned, get checked and don’t be afraid to visit the doctor’s office when you don’t feel 100%,” he wrote. “The stuff we consume has been altered significantly over the years and we’ve been hearing more and more people in this age range are getting diagnosed with these things.”
The shocking diagnosis stunned college football fans who remember Garcia as one of the most electric quarterbacks to ever suit up for the South Carolina Gamecocks.
During his time in Columbia from 2008 through 2011, Garcia became one of only six quarterbacks in school history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a single season. He wrapped up his college career with an impressive 7,597 passing yards and 47 touchdowns across 40 games.
But his most unforgettable moment came in 2010 when Garcia helped lead South Carolina to a stunning upset over powerhouse Alabama Crimson Tide, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation at the time.
Garcia threw for 210 yards in the historic win — a game many fans still consider one of the biggest victories in Gamecocks history.
That same season, Garcia helped push South Carolina to a 9-3 record and its first-ever SEC Championship Game appearance, cementing his place as one of the program’s most memorable quarterbacks.
Now, instead of battling SEC defenses, Garcia is fighting a far more personal war — and fans across the country are rallying behind him as he begins the difficult road ahead.
