Anderson Cooper Sparks Jeopardy! Takeover Buzz as Ken Jennings Faces New Pressure

Anderson Cooper may be best known as one of CNN’s most recognizable faces, but insiders claim the longtime anchor could have his eye on a very different kind of TV throne.

The Jeopardy! podium.Cooper, 58, has reportedly become the subject of fresh speculation as questions swirl about his future at CNN. With his contract eventually coming up and new ownership expected to reshape the network, some insiders believe Cooper may be looking beyond cable news.

And one possible landing spot has fans talking.

According to a source, Cooper has a deep love for game shows and is a major Jeopardy! fan. That has fueled rumors that he could one day be a serious contender for a role in the Jeopardy! universe, or perhaps even a threat to current host Ken Jennings.

“Everybody is waiting to see what Anderson does when his contract at CNN runs out and the new owners take over,” one insider said. “He has a deep passion for game shows in general and is a massive fan of Jeopardy! in particular.”

Cooper is no stranger to the legendary quiz show. He has competed on Jeopardy! four times, winning twice. He has also served as a guest host, giving viewers a taste of what he might look like behind the podium.

That is reportedly enough to make Jennings nervous.

Jennings, 52, became the face of Jeopardy! after the death of beloved longtime host Alex Trebek in November 2020. While Jennings has history with the show as one of its greatest champions, his run as host has not silenced every critic.

Some longtime viewers have complained about his delivery, occasional gaffes, and what they see as a less commanding presence compared to Trebek.

That has kept speculation alive about whether Sony executives could eventually look for someone else to help sharpen the brand.

“Once again, Ken has a reason to watch his back and keep working on his own hosting,” the insider said, claiming Sony TV executives are always looking for ways to improve one of their biggest moneymakers.

Jeopardy! remains a ratings powerhouse, drawing around 8 million viewers a night. But insiders claim Jennings has struggled to match the towering presence of Trebek, who reportedly drew as many as 12 million viewers nightly before his death.

That comparison has followed Jennings for years.

And now, Cooper’s name is being floated as someone with the smooth delivery, intelligence, and gravitas that some fans still miss from the Trebek era.

“It’s hard to argue that Anderson’s smooth but sharp delivery in a hosting role wouldn’t be welcomed by Jeopardy! fans who are getting a little tired of the Ken Jennings era,” the insider said.

The timing also comes as Sony continues expanding the Jeopardy! brand. In recent years, the company has leaned into spinoffs and special editions, including Celebrity Jeopardy!, Pop Culture Jeopardy!, and ESPN Jeopardy!.

That could give executives room to bring Cooper into the franchise even if Jennings stays on the main show.

One insider suggested Cooper is such a strong fit that Sony could create a special version of the program just for him to host.

“Anderson is a special talent and they could credibly create a special version of the show just for him,” the source said.

Still, the main Jeopardy! job remains the ultimate prize.

“Ken’s job is the one everybody wants,” the insider added. “Anderson has that Alex Trebek-like gravitas that Ken still lacks, even after all the years he’s been involved in the Jeopardy! universe.”

For now, Jennings remains behind the podium and Cooper remains at CNN.

But in TV, nothing stays still forever.
