A 7-year-old girl was killed Wednesday morning after being struck by a school bus in Rockland County, according to police.
Officers responded shortly after 9 a.m. to the intersection of Blauvelt Road and Manor Drive in Monsey, where the child had been hit by a Yeshiva school bus.
The Ramapo Police Department confirmed that the young girl died in the apparent accident.
Authorities said the bus driver is 28 years old. Police do not currently suspect any criminal wrongdoing in connection with the crash.
The tragedy unfolded during a busy part of the morning in a densely populated neighborhood known for having many large families and a high number of children.
Traffic safety is a major focus for Ramapo police because of the number of young people living and traveling throughout the community.
The department runs traffic education programs and has said officers take an aggressive approach to enforcing traffic laws.
More than 16,000 traffic citations were issued by Ramapo police over the past year as part of those enforcement efforts.
The circumstances surrounding the fatal crash remain under investigation.
