A tragic case that stunned a community has reached a major turning point after the man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend at a cancer charity event accepted a plea deal.

Jackson Hopper, 27, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of Ellie Claire Young, avoiding a trial that had been scheduled for later this year. He was originally charged with first-degree murder.

As part of the agreement, Hopper has been sentenced to 40 years in prison. Reports say the deal was reached in coordination with Young’s family, giving them a chance to move forward without reliving the tragedy in court.

The heartbreaking incident happened on October 19, 2024, during an American Cancer Society event at the Shelby Farms area in Memphis. Young, just 22 years old, had shown up to take part in a breast cancer awareness walk when the situation turned deadly.

According to investigators, Hopper pulled up behind her vehicle and opened fire. When Young got out of her car, he continued shooting, striking her as she fell to the ground. She later died from her injuries at the scene.

The violence didn’t end there.

After the shooting, Hopper fled, leading police on a multi-county chase. Authorities say he drove recklessly, allegedly attempting to hit law enforcement officers before eventually being taken into custody.

He still faces additional charges tied to that chase, including assault, evading arrest, and reckless endangerment.

In court, the judge acknowledged the unimaginable pain felt by Young’s loved ones, expressing hope that the resolution might allow them to begin healing. The family’s attorney echoed that sentiment, asking for privacy as they continue to grieve.

Young’s family has also filed a wrongful death lawsuit seeking millions in damages, which had been on hold until the criminal case was resolved.
